Bowling Green, Ohio – The Falcons will continue with its 2015 spring season this weekend, as the Bowling Green State University women's golf team will head south to compete in the EKU Colonel Classic on April 3-4 in Richmond, Kentucky.
Hosted by Eastern Kentucky University at the Arlington Golf & Country Club in Richmond, Ky., the 10 team field includes Austin Peay, Ball State, Ohio, Bowling Green, Cleveland State, Cumberlands, IUPUI, Northern Kentucky, Tennessee Tech and host Eastern Kentucky.
This year marks the seventh straight year in which head coach Stephanie Young and her Falcons have taken part in the EKU Colonel Classic and the eighth time overall having first played in the spring event at Eastern Kentucky back in 2003-04.
The Falcons will send out a veteran lineup to represent the Orange and Brown this weekend in seniors Patricia Holt and Shelby Wilson, junior Lily Bartell, sophomore Fran Rodriguez and junior Hannah Lewis. Fellow sophomore Mikayla Baer will compete as an individual at the two-day event.
Holt is coming off a top-20 finish at the Rio Verde Invitational back on March 13-15 in which she improved her score over each round of play with rounds of 79, 76 and 72 for a combined 54-hole score of 227, +11. Her third round of 72, even par, was the lowest 18-hole score of the season for the senior who has posted four top-20 finishes this year and went a perfect 3-0-0 to open the spring season at the Women's Mid-American Match Play Challenge in February.
Wilson has also had a strong start to the spring season, as she went 2-1-0 overall in match play at the Women's Mid-American Match Play Challenge and then most recently posted a 23rd-place showing at the Rio Verde Invitational with rounds of 78, 72 and 78 for a combined three-round score of 228, +12. Like Holt, Wilson's round of 72 was the lowest on the season for the senior who has totaled three top-10 finishes and a total of five top-25 finishes on the year, highlighted by back-to-back fourth-place finishes at the Golden Grizzlies Invitational and the Bearcat Classic this past fall.
Bartell will look to capture the magic she had at last year's EKU Colonel Classic tournament, as the junior carded rounds of 81 and 74 to finish in a tie for fourth-place overall with a 36-hole combined score of 155, +11, at the 2014 spring event. She is coming off three rounds of play at the Rio Verde Invitational in March in which she turned in rounds of 80, 74 and 80 to finish in a tie for 54th-place overall with a combined score of 234, +18. Bartell's second round 74 matched her season-low 18-hole score on the year.
The lone Falcon in the BGSU lineup to be playing in her first-ever EKU Colonel Classic, Rodriguez will look for more consistency in her play this weekend. Last time out, the sophomore was up-and-down with rounds of 83, 74 and 81 to finish the two-day event with a 54-hole score of 238, +22, at the Rio Verde Invitational. Rodriguez, who has three top-15 finishes on the season, has posted low rounds of 73, 74, 74 and 77 this season.
Like Rodriguez, Lewis will also be looking for steadiness in her play this weekend, as the junior also finished the Rio Verde Invitational with a 54-hole score of 238, +22, comprised up of rounds of 74, 83 and 81. Lewis, who went 2-1-0 in match play to open up the spring season, has twice carded a season-low round 72 this year and finished in a tie for 24th-place overall with a combined score of 233, +17, as an individual at the 2012-13 Colonel Classic.
Playing as an individual in this event for the second straight year, Baer will look to improve upon her 36-hole score of 169, +25, at last year's 2014 Colonel Classic as a freshman. This past fall, Baer recorded four top-25 finishes and carded a low round 18-hole score of 74 at the Cardinal Classic.
BGSU finished fourth out of 14 teams at the EKU Colonel Classic in 2012-13 and posted a sixth-place showing out of 12 teams in last year's event, after recording back-to-back eighth-place team finishes in 2010-11 and 2011-12.
The tournament will consist of 36 holes of play on Friday, April 3, beginning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The third and final round of play is scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Saturday, April 4.
Live scoring for both days of play will be provided by www.Golfstat.com. A link to the live scoring page will also be available on the women's golf schedule page at www.BGSUFalcons.com.
