BGSU falls to Villanova & Maine at USF Under Armour Showcase
The Bowling Green State University softball team could not get untracked at the plate on Saturday (March 7), as the Falcons dropped a 5-0 decision to Villanova University and a 6-1 contest against the University of Maine. Both games were part of second-day action at the USF Under Armour Showcase.
In the opener, the Falcons were held to just one hit by Villanova starting pitcher Brette Lawrence, and the Wildcats broke on top for good with a four-run fourth inning.
Lawrence faced just four batters over the minimum, allowing one hit and walking one batter while striking out 12. BG's lone hit came in the bottom of the first inning, when Marina Cobbs roped a two-out single to centerfield. But, the VU sophomore struck out the next batter to end the inning, and never allowed a runner past first base.
BG's other three baserunners came in the third, fifth and seventh innings. Senior Emily McClelland was hit by pitch on two occasions, and Haley Schrock worked Lawrence for a seventh-inning walk.
Junior Braiden Dillow kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard in the first three innings, scattering four hits in that time. But, Villanova broke through in the fourth. After Aleshia Ayers singled with one out, Dillow got Ali Angelbello to pop up to third baseman Chloe Giordano for the second out. But, Jessica Angersbach drew a walk, and the next four batters would single, wich a run scoring in each case.
Leadoff hitter Lauren Herschberg singled to center to plate the first run, and Shea Palmer, Chase Snell and Dana Morris each followed with a run-scoring single of their own. Senior Jamie Kertes replaced Dillow and got an inning-ending grounder, but the 'Cats had a four-run lead.
Villanova tacked on a final run in the seventh, as Brittany Husk led off with a double and took third on a wild pitch. Kertes struck out Sierra McConnell, but an Ayers grounder allowed Husk to score the game's fifth and final run. Lawrence struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh, allowing only the two-out walk to Schrock.
The Wildcats had 13 hits in the game, with five different players recording two hits apiece. Dillow allowed four runs and nine hits in three-and-two-thirds innings of work, while Kertes pitched three-and-a-third innings, giving up one run and four hits. She struck out three batters and did not issue a walk.
In the Falcons' second game of the day, Maine jumped on top with three first-inning runs, and the Black Bears made it a 4-0 lead in the second frame. Emj Fogel had a pair of doubles in the game, scoring two runs and driving in two as well.
Fogel plated the game's first two runs. After Rachel Carlson began the game with a bunt single, Felicia Lennon followed with a single to right. Carlson advanced to third base, and Lennon, who went 3-for-4 at the plate in the game, took second on the throw. BG starter Kertes got the next hitter to pop up to McClelland at second base, but Fogel followed with a double to center.
After Jessica Burk singled through the left side of the field, the Black Bears scored a third run when Burk stole second, and the throw trickled away from the BG infielders, allowing Fogel to score from third.
UM got an unearned run in the second. After the first two batters singled, Dillow replaced Kertes in the circle. She got Carlson to hit a soft liner to sophomore Aspen Searle at shortstop, but Lennon singled to load the bases, and Erika Leonard reached on an infield grounder, with Nikki Byron scoring and the bases remaining loaded. Dillow got a fielder's choice grounder for a force out at the plate, then induced Burk to pop up to shortstop.
Maine starter Annie Kennedy was perfect through three innings, but Searle led off the bottom of the fourth with a double down the left-field line. One out later, she scored on a sharp single up the middle by Cobbs.
Sophomore Trista Mokienko followed with a double to left, moving Cobbs to third, but Alexis Bogdanovich replaced Kennedy in the circle and got a fly-ball out and a strikeout.
With the exception of a Byron single up the middle in the fifth, neither team had another baserunner until the seventh. Fogel led off with a double, and scored when Burk singled up the middle. With two outs, Byron singled to right to plate Burk. Byron had three hits in the game.
Bogdanovich worked a one-two-three frame in the bottom of the seventh to close out the game, grabbing a liner by pinch-hitter Sami Parave for the final out.
The Black Bears had 12 hits in the game, while UM's two pitchers allowed just three hits. Bogdanovich faced the minimum 11 batters in her three-and-two-thirds innings stint, striking out three.
The Falcons conclude play in the USF Under Armour Showcase on Sunday morning (March 8), taking on SIU Edwardsville in a game starting at 11:15 a.m.
