Bowling Green, Ohio – Sophomores Mikayla Baer and Fran Rodriguez each paced their respective BGSU squads on day one of the fifth annual Dolores Black Falcon Invitational held at the par 72, 5,960-yards golf course at the Stone Ridge Golf Club in Bowling Green, Ohio.
One BGSU team carded a first round team score of 308, +20, to sit in a tie for third-place overall with Youngstown State and just six strokes off the lead, while the other Falcons' lineup carded a first round team score of 321, +33, to end day one in eighth-place overall out of the 11-team field.
"I am so proud of our team today. Mikayla (Baer) posted another solid round for us. Plus our seniors and Hannah (Lewis) helped us post four scores in the 70's," commented head coach Stephanie Young. "Also Julia (Hoffman) and Miranda (Dubler) had career rounds in tournament play. We have a lot of momentum at home for tomorrow."
Baer, who carded a team-best three birdies and 11 pars over her 18 holes of play, led the third-place BGSU team with a low round 74, +2. The sophomore is in a tie for second-place overall and is only three strokes behind the individual leader.
Also on the Falcons' team that shot a team score of 308, +20, was Patricia Holt, Hannah Lewis, Shelby Wilson and Lily Bartell.
Both Holt and Lewis posted 11 pars on the day, as Holt finished with a round of 77, +5, while Lewis finished one stroke behind Holt with her score of 78, +6. Holt concluded day one in a tie for 13th-place overall, while Lewis sits in a tie for 17th heading into the final round of play on Sunday.
Wilson totaled 10 pars on her way to a first round score of 79, +7, good enough to place her in a tie for 21st-place overall, while Bartell rounded out the lineup with 11 pars and an 18-hole score of 80, +8, to finish day one in a tie for 25th-place overall.
Pacing the second unit for the Falcons was Rodriguez with a team-high 14 pars en route to a first round 77, +5, to find herself in a tie for 13th-place overall.
Behind Rodriguez on the second BGSU squad were Julia Hoffman, Miranda Dubler, Madelynn Swank and Lauren Diehl.
Both Hoffman and Dubler carded matching first round scores of 80, +8, to head into Sunday's final round of play in a tie for 25th-place overall. Hoffman turned in 12 pars, while Dubler recorded two birdies on Saturday.
BGSU's Swank tallied one birdie and a first round score of 84, +12, while Diehl ended day one with a score of 86, +14. Swank sits in a tie for 43rd-place overall, while Diehl is in a tie for 51st.
Western Michigan leads after day one of play with a Saturday team-low score of 302, +14, while Toledo is in second-place with a score of 303, +15.
The second and final round of play is slated to begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. ET at the Stone Ridge Golf Club.
