Cole, Lambert & Santoro get it done in 2014-15
Back in November, the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team signed three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Those three individuals – Maddie Cole (Sylvania, Ohio), Sydney Lambert (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Carly Santoro (Bellevue, Ohio) – went on to have stellar senior seasons at their respective high schools.
Cole, a 6-0 forward, averaged 10.5 points and 8 rebounds per game as a senior at Sylvania Northview High School, helping coach Brittaney Cymbolin's team to the Northern Lakes League championship. The Ladykats finished with an overall record of 18-6, won a sectional title and advanced to the district semifinal round. Cole earned All-NLL and District 7 second-team honors, and was an AP District Honorable-Mention selection.
Lambert, a 5-8 guard, helped McAuley H.S. to a 22-4 overall record and a 9-1 Girls' Greater Catholic League record, earning a league co-championship. The Mohawks, coached by Dan Wallace, won a district title and advanced to the regional semifinals, losing to the eventual state champions. Lambert was a first-team All-GGCL and All-District selection, and was a District 16 All-Star. She averaged 12.0 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.3 steals on the season, shooting 40 percent from the field and better than 83% from the free-throw line. Lambert was chosen to play in both the Ohio vs. Indiana and Ohio vs. Kentucky all-star games.
Santoro, a 5-10 guard, concluded a stellar career by earning All-Ohio First-Team honors as a senior at Bellevue H.S. She was the District 6 and Northwest District Player of the Year as well, as the Lady Red (coached by her father, Kory Santoro) won the Northern Ohio League for a fifth consecutive year and broke the school record for wins. Santoro was an all-league and all-district first-team selection in all four seasons. The Lady Red went 24-2 in 2014-15, winning sectional and district championships and advancing to the regional finals. Santoro broke the school records for total points (786) and points per game (30.2), and she also averaged 5.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 3.9 steals per contest. She set the school's career records for points, with 2,387, and steals, with 309, and ended her career with 447 rebounds, good for eighth in school history. Santoro is ranked 10th in OHSAA history in career points, and she also finished among the all-time OSHAA leaders for free throws in a season (186, 13th) and in a career (522, eighth).
The Falcons of head coach Jennifer Roos had three seniors – Erica Fullenkamp, Deborah Hoekstra and Jasmine Matthews – on the 2014-15 roster. Fullenkamp, a BGSU volleyball standout, was added to the women's basketball roster in January, after no fewer than four players had been lost to season-ending injuries by that time. A fifth player, Matthews, was limited to just 35 minutes during the entirety of the MAC schedule.
Ten of the 13 players that suited up for the Brown and Orange in 2014-15 have at least one year of eligibility remaining, as the '14-15 roster included four true freshmen, two redshirt freshmen, two sophomores, two juniors and the three seniors.
