Lebanon, Ohio – On a day that started with a delay due to frost, the Bowling Green State University women's golf team struggled to find its consistency, as the Falcons registered a first round team score of 328, +40, to finish the first round of the 2015 Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championships in eighth-place overall.
"Overall day one was a success. Once the frost lifted, all the teams had good weather and played some great golf," commented head coach Stephanie Young. "Hats off to Ohio for a super round on a challenging course."
With the Falcons' round of 328, +40, BGSU is in eighth-place overall out of the ten team field.
"As far as our team score, we are definitely disappointed in the outcome. It is one of our highest totals of the season," added Coach Young. "We must come out right away tomorrow ready to execute our shots especially on the first nine holes. I have complete confidence in this team."
Held at the Shaker Run Golf Club in Lebanon, Ohio, the Falcons were led by seniors Patricia Holt and Shelby Wilson.
Holt posted a first round BGSU low score of 77, +5, to end day one in a tie for 10th-place overall. The senior birdied holes No. 9, No. 10 and No. 16 on the day to put her in a tie for the second most birdies overall with three. Wilson totaled a first round 80, +8, as she birdied holes No. 2 and No. 11 to conclude her day in a tie for 21st-place overall. Wilson led the tournament field in par 3 scoring with an average of 2.75, -1, for the day.
Junior Lily Bartell posted a first round score of 83, +11, to head into the second round of play on Saturday in a tie for 36th-place overall, while both Hannah Lewis and Mikayla Baer carded an 88, +16, over the first 18-holes of the event. Both Bartell and Lewis matched Holt and Wilson with a team-high eight pars overall, while Baer tallied seven pars and a birdie on the par 3 hole No. 2.
Ohio holds a two stroke lead over the Kent State, as the Bobcats turned in a first round team score of 302, +14, compared to the Golden Flashes score of 304, +16.
Toledo (309, +21) is in third-place overall after one round of play, while Western Michigan (312, +24) sits in fourth-place heading into the weekend.
Due to the threat of rain throughout Saturday, the second round of play will begin with a double tee time off of holes No. 1 and No. 10 beginning at 8:00 a.m., weather permitting.
