Falcons Set To Battle Miami and Ball State At Home, Notre Dame On Road

Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University softball team continues Mid-American Conference action this weekend, taking on Miami (OH) and Ball State at home. The Falcons (12-16, 3-3 MAC) will take on Redhawks in a twin bill on Friday afternoon before taking on the Cardinals in single games on Saturday and Sunday.
BGSU will then hit the road next Tuesday, April 14 for a single game matchup with Notre Dame at 6 p.m.
ABOUT THE REDHAWKS
Game 1 vs. Miami: Friday, April 10 at 1 p.m.
Game 2 vs. Miami: Friday, April 10 at 3 p.m.
Miami enters the BG doubleheader with an overall record of 21-14 (5-1 MAC). Most recently, the Redhawks fell to Wright State 3-6 last Tuesday, April 7. The team was originally scheduled to play two games, but the second was cancelled. Head coach Clarisa Crowell is in her third year at the helm, and is assisted by Brittany Lastrapes and Justin Shults.

Deanna Gumpf is in her 14th season as head coach of NDU. The Fighting Irish (28-11), most recently defeated the MAC's Western Michigan 10-2 in six innings. Notre Dame will play four more games before hosting the Falcons at Melissa Cook Stadium next week. Gumpf is assisted by Kris Ganeff and Lizzy Ristano.

LAST TIME OUT
Despite home runs from sophomore Aspen Searle and freshman Kayla Koch, the BGSU softball team fell just short April 5, as host Western Michigan University hung on for a 3-2 win over the Falcons. Searle led the BG attack, going 2-for-4 this past Sunday. Jenny Rohn was 3-for-3 for the Broncos, as WMU had a narrow 7-6 advantage in hits.
FLOCKING HOME
BGSU is scheduled to play 16 of its next 17 games at Meserve Field. The only away trip the Falcons make before May is to South Bend, Ind. for a matchup with the Fighting Irish on April 14.
GIORDANO PROVIDES SENIOR LEADERSHIP
Chloe Giordano had a total of six doubles in her first three seasons at BG, but has seven doubles this year alone. She ranks second on the team in doubles, just two behind Searle. The senior already has a total of nine extra-base hits (seven doubles, one triple and one homer) in 2015 after recording a total of nine during her first three seasons combined.
SEARLE SPARKS OFFENSE
Searle has hit a homer in each of BG's last three doubleheaders, including sweeps of Toledo and Detroit, as well as the split series with NIU. The sophomore now has eight homers this season after hitting three during her freshman year. Searle is hitting an incredible .5566 when leading off an inning, having gone 30-of-53 in such situations this season. She leads the team in slugging percentage, runs scored, hits, RBIs, doubles, HRs, total bases and total plate appearances.
FAST START FALCONS
BGSU has now scored 44 first inning runs through 28 games this season to date. The Falcons started the season having scored 22 first inning runs through the team's first eight games. The Falcons highest scoring first inning was at the Cleveland State Dome Tournament (Feb. 6-8), with 10 against Canisius in BG's third game of the tournament.
PRESEASON POLL
BGSU was chosen to finish sixth in the Mid-American Conference East Division in the Softball preseason coaches poll, as announced Tuesday afternoon by the league offices. Defending MAC Champions Ohio University was tabbed to be the favorite in the East Division in 2015, receiving eight out of a possible 12 first place votes. Kent State was picked to finish second with two votes, and Akron and Buffalo each received one first place vote. The Zips and Bulls were chosen to finish third and fourth, respectively. Miami was picked to finish fifth in the East, followed by BGSU in sixth to round out the East.
