Brooke Pleger Named MAC Most Outstanding Field Athlete
May 16, 2015 | Women's Track and Field
Muncie, Ind. – Bowling Green State University redshirt senior Brooke Pleger was named the Mid-American Conference's Most Outstanding Field Athlete, as announced at the conclusion of the MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Pleger earned the award for the second time in her career, also being named the winner in 2013 after breaking the MAC record in the hammer throw to win the first of her three MAC Championships.
In 2015, Pleger has been dominant, earning the No. 1 ranking in the country in the hammer throw for much of the year. She again broke the MAC record Thursday at the conference championships, throwing the hammer 228-feet-9 to earn her third consecutive league title in the event. She won the meet by 27 feet and the worst of her six throws would have still won the league crown by 11 feet. She owns the top eight throws in the country this year and ranks No. 10 all-time among collegiate hammer throwers.
"It's really hard to describe what she's done here," BGSU Track & Field Coach Lou Snelling said. "She is such a special athlete. She's not somebody you get very often during a coaching career. Coach (Matt) Conly has done a fantastic job coaching her. It was a special meet for her and we're really excited about where she's going to go."
Pleger will head to the NCAA East Regional preliminary round as the No. 1 ranked hammer thrower in the country. She is a two-time All-American after placing seventh at the NCAA National Championships as a sophomore and third as a junior. Pleger could become the first female three-time All-American in BGSU history.
Pleger is a 10-time MAC Field Athlete of the Week winner and holds no fewer than eight facility records in her career. She is a two-time BGSU Athlete of the Year and was awarded the Falcon Medal of Honor in May, the most prestigious award given to a student-athlete by the department. It is presented to one male and one female each year who most embodies the qualities BGSU Athletics holds important for all student-athletes.
Along with her success in the field of competition, Pleger is an Academic All-American who graduated with a 3.574 grade point average in nursing.
