Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University graduate Brooke Pleger has been named Capital One Academic All-American for the second time in her career. After being named third team a year ago, she earned second team status this year to become the first two-time Academic All-American in BGSU women's track and field history.
Pleger graduated with a nursing degree in May, boasting a 3.624 grade point average. In competition, she was one of the best in BGSU Athletics history, being named a three-time All-American and finishing third in the country in the hammer throw in back-to-back seasons.
"Brooke embodies a true student-athlete, taking both her academic and athletic careers about as far as you can," BGSU Cross Country/Track & Field Coach Lou Snelling said. "Academically, she chose one of the more challenging paths in attaining a nursing degree. In the end, being named second team Academic All-American recognizes that hard work in the classroom and in the throwing circle. It is proof again that, with the right work ethic, achieving at the highest level is absolutely possible at Bowling Green."
Pleger was a six time Academic All-MAC honoree, earning the honor every time she was eligible (three times during the indoor season and three times during the outdoor season in her career). She earned 10 MAC Field Athlete of the Week honors and was twice named the MAC's Most Outstanding Field Athlete of the Year. She was also twice named the Great Lakes Region Field Athlete of the Year by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Pleger is also a nominee for the prestigious NCAA Woman of the Year this year.
During her career, Pleger won the MAC Championship in the hammer throw three times and qualified for three NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field National Championships. As a redshirt sophomore, she placed seventh in 2013 and followed that up with third place finishes in both 2014 and 2015. Those are the top two results in BGSU Women's Track and Field history at the national championships.
