Brooke Pleger Named Great Lakes Region Field Athlete Of The Year
June 08, 2015 | Women's Track and Field
Eugene, Ore. – Bowling Green State University redshirt senior Brooke Pleger has been named the Great Lakes Region Field Athlete of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Pleger is one of nine regional winners with the Great Lakes Region encompassing 34 schools across the states of Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin. She also earned the award a year ago and is the only Falcon to ever be honored with a USTFCCCA Region Athlete of the Year award.
Pleger heads to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championships this week as the top hammer thrower in the country, throwing as far as 228-feet-9 this year, placing herself tenth on the all-time collegiate performers list.
She has been ranked No. 1 for most of the season and has set new Mid-American Conference and MAC Championship records. She also set a new NCAA East Region preliminary round record as she threw the hammer 222-2 for a new University of North Florida stadium record. Pleger holds all of the top 10 throws in BGSU history and she heads to the national championships with an opportunity to become the first female three-time All-American in school history. She finished seventh at the national championships in 2013 and third in 2014 – the best result at the meet in program history.
Bowling Green has not had a national champion since gymnast Marny Oestreng won the floor exercise in 1999 and not female track and field student-athlete has ever won a title.
The hammer throw takes place Thursday at 4:30 pm ET at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field. Coverage begins on ESPN3 at 1 pm.
