Griffin Qualifies For USA Olympic Trials
With Olympic Trials coming up next summer, the Bowling Green State University swimming and diving program swam in a long course dual meet at University of Akron on the afternoon of Dec. 7 following the three-day Zippy Invitational. The meet was designed to give swimmers an opportunity to qualify for USA Olympic Trials next summer. One Falcon swimmer did just that, as Victoria Griffin punched her ticket to next summer's event in Omaha, Neb. The story of the day was Griffin, a junior from Littlestown, Pa. On the last swim of the first session, she swam a 26.21 in the 50 free to just miss the cut mark of 26.19. But, she had the chance for redemption just 30 minutes later and put up a 26.00 to punch her ticket to next summer's USA Olympic Trials.
Training Trip
Over the winter break, the swimming and diving program spent 10 days in Florida for winter training camp. After dropping the divers off for their training in Orlando, Fla., the swimmers continued on to Naples and arrived on Dec. 31. The Orange and Brown completed eight days in Naples of intense training, team bonding, community service, and more.
One of the most rewarding things about the trip for the swimmers was volunteering at Grace Place in Naples, Fla. Grace Place is an organization that provides a pathway out of poverty by educating children and families in Naples. They offer after school programs, daycare, and night classes for adults and children. The team went there to help the volunteers spread safety mulch on their playground. During the day full of volunteering, the team helped spread 840 bags of mulch on a local playground.
Outside of diving, the members of the diving team spent time enjoying Orlando and volunteering at the local YMCA. Each day consisted of 4+ hours of diving and a rigorous workout schedule. After several days of hard work and new dives the team went to Disney World's Magic Kingdom. They also found opportunities to volunteer, taking an afternoon after workout to help the staff clean up and Coach Alex Gauvin gave the maintenance staff a few pointers on how to maintain their diving boards in the humid Florida weather.
During the trip, sophomore Natalie Criswell filed a daily blog following each day. That blog can be accessed at BGSUFalcons.com by clicking HERE.
