Maya Skorupski Named MAC Swimmer of the Week
October 14, 2016 | Women's Swimming & Diving
CollegeSwimming Swimmers of the Week
Senior, Maya Skorupski, was named Mid-American Conference "Swimmer of the Week" by top college swimming platform, CollegeSwimming.
Every week, CollegeSwimming announces their pick for "National & Conference Swimmer of the Week" for over 40 conferences around the country. This week for the MAC, it was the turn of BGSU's one only, Maya Skorupski. The Falcon was picked because of her recent performance at Notre Dame's annual Dennis Stark Relays meet. At the meet, Skorupski led two of the Falcon's A relays and was the anchor for one more.
The senior led the Falcons to a second place finish in the 3x100 yard backstroke. The senior split a 58.94 as the first leg off the relay, which ended up stopping the clock at 2:54.84. The Chicago native made a second appearance at the meet by being the starting leg of a relay once again, only this time in the 4x100 yard medley. Skorupski gave the rest of the Falcons a great start by splitting a 1:26.34. The relay ended up with a second place finish in the event with a cumulative time of 3:57.17. A third, and final appearance from the senior was made in the 4x50 yard freestyle. This time, the Falcon was the anchor of the relay, splitting a 24.70 to stop the clock for the rest of the Falcons at 1:36.87, which earned the team a second place finish.
Head coach, Matt Ense, is in his second year leading the women's swimming and diving program for BGSU. Coach Ense had a few words to say about the senior being named MAC swimmer of the week by CollegeSwimming. "It's a pretty big honor to be recognized by collegeswimming.com. Maya has put in a lot of good work over the last three years. Starting the season off on a good note, Maya put in a lot of good work this summer to be prepared for this season, to finish on a good note. During her races last weekend she was prepared, came out and performed at a high level. In one of her races her goggles came off and she was able to persevere and still finish with her best time of the night in the 100 backstroke for the season so far. After the meet, just a testament to earning this honor, she was also our performer of the weekend when we were at our training camp. So Maya has been doing a lot of great things when she comes to practice every day and it's showing at the meets."
The Falcons will be back in action in Cooper Pool on Friday, Oct. 21 starting at 6 P.M. as they host school rival, the Toledo Rockets.
