TERRA HAUTE, Ind. – The Bowling Green State University cross country teams competed in the 2016 Indiana State Pre-Nationals in Terra Haute, Ind. on Saturday, Oct. 15. The meet represented the final regular season event for the Falcons, who face the 2016 MAC Championships in 14 days.
The women's team participated in the 6,000-meter White division race. The Falcons were part of a 25-team field that included six ranked teams and five Mid-American Conference squads. Redshirt sophomore Rachel Walny finished fourth overall in the race, held on the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course. Her effort helped the BGSU place ninth out of 25 and third among the five MAC teams.
Walny completed the course in 21:04.9, just 16.4 seconds behind Annemarie Schwanz of Fresno State. Rebecca Schott finished 27th in the field of 165 runners and set an 8K personal record with a time of 21:49.9. That mark topped her previous best, 22:03.0 at the 2015 Paul Short Run.
Cassandra Boyle and Kelsie Mothersead both participated in their first 6K races, and Boyle took 30th place in 21:55.3. Mothersead finished in 23:58.7. Elena Lancioni (22:41.1), Rachel Durbin (23:27.6) and Allison Francis (23:57.9) also competed in the team effort for the Falcons.
Jody Musser ran in the women's open 6,000-meter race, and her time (25:07.4) was good for 90th place.
The men's team was part of the 41-team Blue division race. The Falcons were the only MAC squad in the event, and all of the participating teams were regionally ranked. Eight of the teams were nationally ranked, with another three receiving votes in the most recent national poll. BGSU placed 40th overall but gained a wealth of experience.
Noah Schaub set an official 8,000-meter personal record by crossing the finish in 25:36.7; that bests his 25:57.5 from this season's Mel Brodt Collegiate Invitational. Tyler Phillips also set a PR with a time of 25:56.8. He had also set his previous record (26:58.3) at this year's Mel Brodt.
Kohl Taberner (25:48.9) and Jonathan Wenning (25:52.7) were both excruciatingly close to setting their own 8K records. Taberner was just 3.7 seconds away, while Wenning was 5.2 shy. Nick Voth (26:45.7) and Kyle Repetto (27:34.4) rounded out BGSU's Pre-Nationals team.
Paul Garbarino competed in the men's open 8,000-meter event. He finished 60th In 28:25.8.
The Falcons' next meet is in Kent, Ohio at the 2016 MAC Championships. That meet will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29.
