Cross Country Set for MAC Championships on Saturday
October 27, 2016 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University cross country teams head to Kent, Ohio on Saturday, Oct. 29, where they will coompete in the 2016 Mid-American Conference Championships. The meet will be held at the Kent State University Golf Course. The women's 6,000-meter race will take place first at 11:00 a.m., while the men's 8,000-meter event follows at noon.
Both teams will attempt to build on success at least year's MAC meet. In 2015, the women's team placed second overall with 72 points. It was the team's best finish by place since 2006 and by points since winning the MAC title in 1998. Seven Falcons placed in the top 31 runners, and no other school in the field had more than five runners place that high. BGSU had two runners earn All-MAC status, including Rachel Walny, who sealed Freshman of the Year honors with a fifth-place run. Those two All-MAC runners are tied for the team's most since having three in 1998.
The men's team earned its top MAC finish in 15 years last season and has spent the 2016 schedule building on that success. The Falcons have been without last season's top runner Nathan Kuck due to injury, but depsite that, BGSU has achieved its first regional ranking and was invited to compete among the top bracket at the Indiana State Pre-Nationals. In that event, the Falcons ran against 40 other regionally ranked teams, several of whom were also ranked nationally. Noah Schaub has lifted himself to top-runner status for the Falcons in Kuck's absence, but BGSU has several other runners back from last year's MAC meet, including Jonathan Wenning and Kohl Taberner. Both Wenning and Taberner finished in the top 37 last season.
