BCSN - Feature Story, Ashley White
The love for BGSU seems to be hereditary for sophomore, Ashley White. The 19-year-old diver for the Falcons is the daughter of former BGSU diver, Jen White. BCSN sports interviewed both Ashley and her mom, as well as coach Koester, who is in his first year as the head diving coach for BGSU, in regards of the White's family history with the program.
Choosing to be a Falcon
During the interview, Ashley talks about how she grew up under her mother's coaching. Jen White walked on to the Falcon's swimming and diving program in the late 1980's. Today, she describes it as "the best experience ever". However, when it came the time for Ashley to take her career to the next level, being a Falcon wasn't her first choice. Ashley recalled "I knew that she played sports and dove here, so it was always kind of like in the back of my mind but I was like, I don't want to follow my mom's footsteps. I don't want to be my mom, but funny thing, I am".
Finding a Balance
Mother and daughter recalled their days together back when Ashley was in high school and under her mother's coaching. Jen White talked about the difficulties of finding the balance in "wanting her to fall in love with the support, but also wanting her to do her best", and how that was even harder to do as a mom.
Coach's Input
Coach Koester commented "Ashley is one of those divers that all the other coaches notice, she's got an innate ability to lead". Then he added "…she got a 4.0 her freshman year, so she is not just succeeding athletically but also academically". Jen said "I know she is in good hands, but I always have my input when she sends me video". Ashley took the time to comment about coach Koester as well, she said, "he is an amazing coach and I've enjoyed every second that I've got to train with him".
Taking Everything In
Thinking about her mom's history, and how she is on the same spot today, Ashley commented, "I just think about how proud my mom would be of me placing at MACs or making it to zones and NCAAs, that's what I look forward to".
For mom, succeeding athletically is just icing on the cake. "To see how Ashley has really come together as a student, as a person, just putting it all together is really neat, really rewarding".
Things seem to be running smooth for the young Falcon, who is in the middle of her second season diving for BGSU. Ashley, and the rest of your Falcons, will be representing the program once again on Friday, Oct. 21 at 5 P.M. in Cooper Pool. Come cheer on your Falcons as they host school rival, the Toledo Rockets.
