The Battle of I-75
October 19, 2016 | Women's Swimming & Diving
The BGSU swimming and diving program will host school rival, the Toledo Rockets, as they take on their first dual meet of the season this Friday at 5 P.M. in Cooper Pool.
The team is almost two months into the 2016-17 season, and this Friday they will take on their first dual meet as they host the Toledo Rockets in the battle of I-75. Last year, the Falcons came out victorious from the battle of I-75. However, if we look at the swimming and diving program's history, BGSU has a losing record against Toledo. The Rockets have a new head of the program this year, coach Jonas Persson. BGSU's head coach, Matt Ense, is in his second year leading the swimming and diving program for the university. Coach Ense took the time to comment on school rivalry, Toledo's new coaching staff, and his thoughts on the Falcon's record against the Rockets.
Coach Ense stated "The swim meet against Toledo on Friday it's a big rivalry meet, our first dual meet of the year. To be able to be competing against a school that is within 25 minutes of our campus, it is our main rivalry, we consider them the school up north, a lot of people here don't refer to them as Toledo so it is, it's a big rivalry for us. Our freshmen will be able to understand what the rivalry means. I know they're going to come in here ready to swim, ready to compete because we beat them last year. They have a new head coach. He is a first year head coach. He is bringing new energy to their team and so they're going to come in wanting to swim fast for him in their first meet for him". Later on, coach Ense added "I consider this meet a big meet for our women. This will be our chance to beat Toledo three years in a row. To be able to notch another one against Toledo would be huge for the program".
The order of events will be the following:
200 Medley Relay
1000 Freestyle
200 Freestyle
100 Backstroke
100 Breaststroke
200 Butterfly
50 Freestyle
1 meter diving
100 Freestyle
200 Backstroke
200 Breaststroke
500 Freestyle
100 Butterfly
200 IM
400 Freestyle Relay
The Rockets will not have a diving team representing their program, which is why the 3-meter diving event will take place at 4 P.M., one hour before the meet officially starts. Come cheer on your Falcons in the battle of I-75 this Friday at 5 P.M. in Cooper Pool.
