Six Falcons Head To ITA Midwest Regionals

Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University tennis team will close out the fall portion of their schedule with the ITA Midwest Regional Championships at Michigan State University. The six day (Oct. 20-25) event features some of the top women's players across the country.
The Falcons have six members of the team traveling to regionals in sophomores Paula Comella and Polina Radeva and freshmen Marharita-Sophia Tavpash, Anna Kholodnaya, Megan Horn and Ayumi Sasaki. Three doubles teams are also in the qualifying matches.
"We're very excited to get to the tournament and compete against the best players in this region," head coach Stephanie Dalmacio said. "The team is ready to show all the hard work and improvements we have done so far. I can't wait to see them perform."
For singles the first round qualifying matches will begin Thursday at 9 a.m. with the second round to follow at 12:30 p.m. Sasaki, Radeva, Kholodnaya and Tavpash will all be competing in singles play for Bowling Green.
Comella will head straight to the main draw which will begin Saturday. Comella is the first Falcon to be in the singles main draw since Nikki Chiricosta in 2011. Comella has a 6-2 record for the Orange and Brown. She earned the top flight title at the Raider Invitational. In the championship, Comella faced her teammate, freshman Anna Kholodnaya tallying a 6-1, 6-3 win.
Tavpash enters regionals with a 7-1 record. She also earned her flight title at the Raider Invitational at Wright State. Tavpash faced Rachel Swartwood in the championship match. She defeated Swartwood 6-3, 6-0 to earn the flight title.
Kholodnaya and Radeva each with a 5-3 record this fall. Kholodnaya has competed in two flight championships one being at the Greater Cincinnati Collegiate Invitational and the other at the Raider Invitational. Radeva finished third at the Purdue Invite. Sasaki enters regionals with a 4-4 record, she has made her way to multiple semifinal matches this season.
The Orange and Brown have three doubles teams in the qualifying matches. Comella and Tavpash will be one of the three, with Sasaki and Horn and Radeva and Kholodnaya being the other two.
Comella and Tavpash lead the Falcons with a 5-2 record. At the Raider Invitational the duo captured the top flight title. Sasaki and Horn have tallied four victories this fall with only three losses. Kholodnaya and Radeva are 2-2 this fall with wins at the Greater Cincinnati Collegiate Invitational and Purdue Invite.
