BGSU Completes Day-One Action At ITA Midwest Regionals

East Lansing, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University tennis team completed the first day of singles qualifying matches at the ITA Midwest Regionals on Michigan State University's campus. The first and second rounds of singles play were held Thursday morning and afternoon.

Two Falcons advanced to the third round, freshmen Anna Kholodnaya and Marharita-Sophia Tavpash.

"We finished day one on a very positive note, reaching two qualifying finals," head coach Stephanie Dalmacio said. Once again, the girls brought a lot of energy and hard work even though there was some nervousness in the beginning. We will keep pushing on and fighting for a spot in the main draw.

Kholodnaya defeated Kelsey Grambeau of Wisconsin in two sets winning 6-1, 6-4. She bested Illinois State's Jelena Vujicic in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Kholodnaya will face Sidnay Huck of Toledo Friday.

Tavpash recorded a 6-0, 5-7, 6-2, victory versus Cleveland State's Aleksandra Golawska. After dropping the first set 4-6, Tavpash made a second set comeback 6-4 over Grace Summers of Eastern Illinois. She went on to take the third, 6-3. Tavpash will take on Illinois' Daniela Pedraza-Novak Friday.

Sophomore Polina Radeva crushed Jade Hilton of Illinois, 6-2, 6-2 in the first round of singles action. Radeva's run was halted in the second round to Western Michigan's Olivia Myers, 6-4, 6-1.

Freshman Ayumi Sasaki fought to the finish, but ultimately fell 7-6(4), 6-3 to Florence Abbott of DePaul.

The Orange and Brown will begin with singles play at 9 a.m. Friday and will finish the day with doubles which is set to begin around 2 p.m.
