BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green women's soccer program (8-10-1, 3-7-1 MAC) concluded the 2016 season in a 2-1 loss to Toledo (8-10-1, 3-7-1 MAC) at home Thursday afternoon. In the Battle of I-75, junior Madison Schupbach scored her first goal of the season, while freshman goalkeeper Kathleen Duwve tallied a career-high 12 saves over the course of the 90 minutes.
"This is such a tough one. On one hand, we are celebrating a season that saw the most wins since 2008 and on the other hand I'm disappointed with the missed opportunity to play in the MAC tournament," Bowling Green women's soccer head coach Lindsay Basalyga said. "Being a must-win game, our youth and inexperience was really exposed and we had to dig ourselves out of a hole. I definitely think we battled for the full 90 minutes, but lacked urgency in front of the goal."
Duwve made some big saves early in the game, keeping the pair of Mid-American Conference foes scoreless through the first half. It was 20 minutes into the matchup that the Sylvania, Ohio native made a diving save, then a minute later stopped a header taken off a corner kick opportunity to keep the Rockets from getting on the board.
Shortly thereafter, junior Skylar Fleak was able to swing the momentum midway through the first half by notching two great chances at the net 25 minutes into play. At halftime, Fleak had tallied four of the Falcons eight attempted shots, while two landed on goal.
The second half had a quick start as just 3:03 after the break, Toledo was able to score its first of the game. The Rockets came down low on the left side of the field, then passed the ball over in front of the goal before scoring in the lower right corner of the net. Toledo then went up 2-0 just 4:33 later by taking two headers at the net following a throw in, with the second getting past the Falcons goalkeeper in the middle of the net.
Schupbach then responded for the Falcons by notching her first goal of the season only 36 seconds after the second Toledo goal, making all three goals come in the span of 5:09. Schupbach received a pass from centerfield by freshman Chelsee Washington, and went on the breakaway before tucking the ball into the lower left corner of the goal. With the exception of the five minute scoring span, the pair of conference foes remained scoreless for the remainder of the match.
Toledo held the edge in shots (23-15), shots on goal (14-5) and corner kick chances (8-3) on the night. Duwve's 12 saves in her 12th start of the season is a new career high, and the freshman now holds a career save percentage of 8.24 through her 13 games played.
"We have learned so much this season and our freshmen have gained invaluable experience that will give us momentum heading into the spring," Coach Basalyga added. "I need to work hard this spring in creating a training environment that will better prepare us to deal with the pressure of our rising expectations."
The Bowling Green women's soccer program concluded the season with an 8-10-1 overall record, while marking a 3-7-1 record in conference play. The team posted the most wins since the 2008 campaign, while redshirt sophomore Erica Hubert was the Falcons leading goal scorer for the second consecutive year after posting seven goals.
