October 06, 2016 | Women's Tennis
Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University tennis team heads to West Lafayette, Ind. for the Purdue Invite. The three day invitational begins Friday, October 7 and will conclude Sunday, October 9 at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
Teams scheduled to participate in the invite include Illinois, Maryland, Michigan State, Northern Illinois, Miami (Ohio) Eastern Kentucky, Western Kentucky, Ball State, Eastern Michigan, Xavier, Lipscomb and Louisville, in addition to the Falcons and host Purdue.
"The Purdue Invite will be a good place to really see where we stand not only in the conference, but also nationally," head coach Stephanie Dalmacio said. "With four conference teams and a couple of ranked ones participating, each player will be challenged to perform better than the last tournament. Let's see who is willing to go the extra mile."
The Falcons have competed at the Greater Cincinnati Invitational as well as the Raider Invitational. Over the course of the fall the team has earned five flight titles.
In doubles, sophomore Paula Comella and freshman Marharita-Sophia Tavpash captured the top flight title by taking down UNOH's Schneider and Reshetnikova, 7-6(5), Kawamoto and Marchant of Dayton, 6-0 and Wright State's Culbertson and Turner, 6-1.
Freshman Anna Kholodnaya and Brigitte Swartwood of IUPUI earned the flight three title by defeating Wright State's Madrigal and Madrigal, 6-1 as well as Haller and Jones also from Wright State, 6-3.
Comella picked up her second top flight singles title and third overall title. She downed Jui-Yun Chang of Murray State 6-2, 3-6, 10-8 and BGSU's Anna Kholodnaya 6-1, 6-3. Tavpash clinched her first flight title recording a 6-3, 6-0 win against Elaine Cloern of Wright State. In the final, Tavpash bested IUPUI's Rachel Swartwood in straight sets 6-3, 6-0.
The Falcons will close out the fall portion of their schedule at the ITA Regionals in East Lansing, Mich. October 20-25.
