Training Trip Day Four
December 21, 2016 | Women's Swimming & Diving
Naples, FL – The Bowling Green State University swimmers and divers are currently enjoying the sun at Naples, Florida, as they focus on their training trip for the 2016-17 season.
The Falcons are only two months away from finishing the 2016-17 season. Quoting second year head coach, Matt Ense, "Training trip is not only a time for the swimmers and divers to work hard, but also to do some quality team bonding. Also with school being done, they can put all of their focus on their practices and recovery time, which is crucial at this point of the season".
Junior Falcon, Natalie Criswell will be blogging daily to keep fans updated. You can find her blog for the fourth day of training trip below:
As day four ends we go to bed with sore muscles, full stomachs, and happy hearts. This amazing day started at 4:30 am with a mix of swim practice and weights. The sprinters headed to Greater Naples YMCA for a boot camp class involving cardio, weights and TRX work. While the sprinters were in class, the mid distance and distance swimmers swim at YMCA Norris pool. The mid distance practice included a lot of short rest swims, sprinting, and the use of different equipment. The distance practice consisted of long descend swimming, long sprinting, and best average work. It was one of our hardest but most successful practices so far on the trip. Afterwards we returned to the condos to grab a quick bite to eat before heading out for a long day of volunteering. Like last year we were volunteering at Grace Place, a non profit educational institute in Golden Gate, Florida for underprivileged families whose goal is to provide "a pathway out of poverty by educating children". This amazing organization does this by offering English classes to parents, providing daycare, running food banks every week, and much more. Last year, we mulched the playground and weeded their gardens, but this year we handed out Christmas meals. It was an eye opening experience as there were over 250 people that came to get meals. Before everyone arrived we crossed off barcodes, portioned bakery items from Publix, set up tables, and unloaded huge food trucks. In addition to all the hard work a couple of us were able to play with many of the kids on the playground; what a treat and boy are they cute! For about 2.5 hours we handed out meals, talked with the many unique individuals, and helped load their cars. It was so cool to hear their stories and to see how thankful they were. One of the coolest parts of the day was watching junior Mandy Washko surprise people by helpfully speaking fluent Spanish with many of the visitors. After about 4.5 hours of volunteering we helped clean up and headed to lunch where we reflected on our day and how lucky we really are. Last year this was everyone favorite day of the trip, and I think its safe to say it will be again this year. To end a great day, the team got into the holiday spirit by having a white elephant gift exchange and making ice cream sundaes with Hannah Albion's parents. It was a fun way to end a great day. With only 3 days left we will be back at it at 5:15am at Norris pool, followed by a spin and yoga class and a trip to the Red Coconut resort.
Keep up with your Falcons at training trip daily, as they get ready for the final part of the 2016-17 season.
