Falcons Ranked Among Nation’s Best Academic Teams
February 19, 2016 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
New Orleans, La. – The Bowling Green State University men's cross country team earned the second-highest team grade point average in the country and the women's cross country team was fourth, as announced today by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Each team was named a 2015 Division I All-Academic Team.
"Our academic team goals are to have the highest team GPA in the conference and be top 25 in the country every year," Head Coach Lou Snelling said. "The team has bought into those goals and takes great pride in achieving at such a high level."
The women's cross country team has a GPA of 3.765 -- fourth highest in the nation and highest in the Mid-American Conference. A year ago, the Falcons were in the Top 25 with a 3.67 GPA. Redshirt freshman Rachel Walny, who currently holds a 4.0 grade point average, was named a 2015 All-Academic Individual. She is the first Falcon to receive the honor under the current USTFCCCA format.
The second highest grade point average in the nation belongs to the men's cross country team, which together earned a 3.754. The men also finished atop the MAC in team GPA. Last year the men's team cumulative 3.47 GPA ranked second highest in the conference, just behind Akron.
"They have worked extremely hard in the classroom while balancing a large athletic load. The women were 2nd in the MAC this fall and the men had their best season in many years. They are true student-athletes," Snelling said.
