School Record Relay Swim Highlights Day One Of MAC Championships

Falcons sit in 4th after one day of the 2016 Championships

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – A school-record swim in the 200 Medley Relay – the first event of the competition – highlighted day one of the 2016 Mid-American Conference Championships for the Bowling Green State University swimming and diving program. The Falcons currently sit in fourth place after Wednesday's two relay events with 62 total points.

"I was really happy with the way we started the meet with the school record in the 200 Medley Relay," head coach Matt Ense said. "We will come back tomorrow with good focus in the morning and look to have strong swims so that we are in good position heading into the finals that night."

Bowling Green's time of 1:39.26 in the 200 Medley Relay started the 2016 MAC Championships out strong, as it was a new school record. The relay team of Maya Skorupski, Daniela Carrillo, Jordan Bullock and Kayla Effinger trumped the previous school record (1:40.52) by more than a full second to finish third in the event. Akron's relay team swam a meet record with a time of 1:37.28 to achieve an NCAA A Cut.

The Falcons also swam a season-best time of 7:19.05 in the 800 Free Relay to finish fourth in the event. Hannah Newman, Victoria Griffin, Franziska Wohlert and Tara Capouch competed in the event for the Orange and Brown, earning BGSU 30 more points in the Championships.

The 2016 MAC Championships will continue at Cooper Pool on Thursday (Feb. 25). The day's full schedule is below:
