Three School Records Fall On Day Three Of MAC Championships

Falcons record 11 top 10 swims in school history during third day

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Three Bowling Green State University swimming school records fell on day three of the 2016 Mid-American Conference Championships at Cooper Pool on Friday evening as the Falcons vaulted into third place with a strong effort. Franziska Wohlert set a new school record in the 400 IM, becoming the Falcons' first MAC Champion in the event in 20 years. Victoria Griffin (200 free) and Daniela Carrillo (100 breast) also set new school records.

"We had a really good day placing eight swimmers in the championship finals and moving into third place," head coach Matt Ense said. "Setting three school records was a big accomplishment today and we also had 11 top 10 swims which I was proud of our team for. We have one day left of the MAC Championships and I am looking forward to even more great swims tomorrow."

Wohlert's swim in the 400 IM started the evening finals off on a strong note, as she became the first MAC Champion in the event to come from BGSU since the 1996 season. Her time of 4:18.04 set a new school record and was a B cut mark as well. Wohlert swam a prelim time of 4:21.79 on Friday morning to qualify as the top seed for the evening finals. A sophomore from Berlin, Germany, Wohlert was joined in the championship final by freshman Emily Verbrugge, who finished fourth. Nicole Hranchook finished seventh in the consolation final, as BGSU scored 37 championship points in the 400 IM on Friday night.

The Falcons' second school record of the night came in the 200 free, an event which saw the Orange and Brown tally an astonishing 46 points. Griffin's time of 1:48.42 marked a new school record and saw her finish second in the A final. Seniors Tara Capouch (fifth) and Hannah Newman (seventh) helped the Falcons to a strong race, while Alexandra Poitinger touched the wall sixth in the consolation final. Outside of her school record, Griffin, Newman and Capouch all tallied top 10 swims in school history during the day.

The third school record of the day came in the 100 breast, as Carrillo actually set a new school mark in each of her two swims during the day. The first in the morning prelims, which she finished with a B cut time of 1:00.65. She was joined by Kristin Filby, who touched in 1:02.82 to qualify as the No. 8 seed in the evening's A finals. Both swimmers had top 10 swims during the night finals, with Carrillo's time of 1:00.57 surpassing the school record she had set earlier in the day. Filby's time of 1:02.25 was also good for the seventh-best mark in school history.

In the 100 fly, senior Jordan Bullock also had a strong day in recording two top 10 swims. Her finals time of 54.94 was the seventh-best swim in school history, while her preliminary time of 54.74 was the third-best mark in the BGSU annals. In the 100 back, Maya Skorupski and Elodie Schreiber tied for first in the B final with a time of 55.63 to earn a split of the top 16 points for the Orange and Brown. Bowling Green's 400 Medley Relay finished fourth to close the day.
