Sophomore Rachel Myers led the Falcons (8-11, 4-6 MAC) with a career-high 24 points, hitting seven three-point field goals. Myers fell just one triple shy of tying the school single-game record. As a team, BG did indeed tie the school record by making 16 treys.
Senior Lauren Tibbs had 14 points for the Brown and Orange, while classmate Miriam Justinger and sophomore Haley Puk added 13 apiece. Justinger was a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range, while Puk's point total was a career best.
Reyna Frost had 24 points to lead four double-digit scorers for the Chippewas (15-7, 9-2 MAC). Cassie Breen scored 15, Hudson 14 and Tinara Moore 11.
Both teams shot over 50 percent from the field, and over 57% from three-point range, in the game. BGSU was 27-of-53 from the field on the day, good for a 50.9% success rate. And, the Falcons went 16-of-27 (59.3%) from three-point land.
Myers missed her first two three-point attempts of the day, then proceeded to make seven in a row, going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc in both the second and third quarters.
But, the Chippewas shot 54.9% from the floor, and 57.1% from beyond the arc. CMU's overall 28-of-51 shooting performance included an 8-of-14 three-point effort.
On 'Disney Day' at McGuirk Arena, the Falcons got off to a fast start, as freshman Sydney Lambert curled off of a screen, took a Myers pass and drilled a trey on the game's opening possession. Moments later, Myers fed Tibbs for a layup and a 5-0 BG lead.
Meanwhile, the Chippewas missed eight consecutive field-goal attempts to begin the game. Central's first basket came nearly midway through the period, as Moore converted a layup. But, Lambert came right back and knocked down another triple try for an 8-2 BG lead.
Hudson answered with a trey, before junior Ashley Tunstall kicked the ball to Tibbs for a foul-lilne jumper. Then, out of the game's first media timeout, Puk canned a long two-pointer -- a shot that was initially ruled a three-pointer.
The Chippewas made a run, scoring six-straight points, and Amani Corley's reverse layup made it a 12-11 game, but Tibbs hit a layup, and after an offensive foul on the Chips, Lambert's third three-pointer of the game gave the Falcons a 17-11 lead after 10 minutes.
Breen opened the second quarter with a long-distance make for the hosts, but Justinger took a Tibbs pass and hit a straightaway trey, and just over a minute later, Lambert found Myers for a three-ball in transition. BGSU's lead was 23-14. Hudson answered with a shot from three-point range, but Justinger came back with a triple of her own, then hit Myers for yet another three, giving BG a 29-17 lead.
After a CMU miss and a BG defensive rebound, junior Abby Siefker took an entry pass, then kicked the ball back out to Myers for still another long-distance connection, and BG had a 32-17 advantage with 5:13 left in the half.
But, back came the hosts. A Breen three-pointer began a 19-6 run to end the half. Siefker grabbed an offensive rebound, was fouled and split a pair of tosses, but Moore made two shots from the stripe, and Breen then hit a three with a defender's hand in her face. Moore's three-point play with the shot clock winding down made it a 33-28 game with just under three minutes left in the period.
Justinger stopped the run, taking a Lambert pass and knocking down a long-range attempt from the left wing. But, Frost scored five-straight points, and after a Puk layup, Breen's and-one layup and the ensuing free throw cut BG's lead to just two points, 38-36, at the half.
The Falcons went 9-of-15 from three-point range in that opening half, including a perfect 6-for-6 from long range in the second quarter. Justinger, Lambert and Myers all hit three first-half triples, with all three of Lambert's makes coming in the first quarter, and both Justinger and Myers going a perfect 3-for-3 from downtown in the second.
And, BG did not cool off as the third quarter got underway. After that 6-for-6 performance in the second period, the Falcons went 6-for-7 from long distance in the third.
Tibbs found Myers for -- guess what? -- a three-pointer that found nothing but net on the first possession of the third quarter, and Justinger dribbled around the top of the arc before -- you guessed it -- hitting another long-range attempt on BG's next trip down the floor.
The Chippewas, however, were responding with points at the other end of the court. CMU scored on each of the first three possessions of the quarter, with two free throws and a pair of layups. The last bucket in that span, a layup from Frost, cut BG's lead to 44-42 with just over two minutes gone in the period.
But, the Falcons got a stop on Central's next trip down the floor, and Myers ventured inside the arc and knocked down a foul-line jumper. A Justinger steal led to Puk's corner three, and BG's lead was 49-42.
Frost scored inside, but Justinger's entry pass resulted in a turnaround one-hander off glass by Tibbs, and Puk kicked the ball out to Myers for yet another trey and a 54-44 lead. On BG's next possession, Puk hit a jumper with the shot clock winding down, giving the visitors an 11-point advantage.
Frost scored again for the hosts, but Puk dialed long distance, putting BG ahead by a 59-47 count. Frost hit back-to-back jumpers to cut her team's deficit to eight, but Tibbs took a pass, turned and hit a jumper over her would-be defender.
The Chippewas sandwiched a pair of baskets around a Myers trey, and the Falcons' lead was 64-55 after three quarters.
Through 30 minutes of play, the Falcons were an eye-popping 15-of-22 from three-point land.
Jewel Cotton, after going without a point through the first three periods, would score the first four points of the fourth, with two free throws and an uncontested layup after a steal. The home team was within five, but Tibbs scored inside, and Puk fed Myers for her seventh-straight three-point make, and BG's lead hit double figures once again, at 69-59.
Another Tibbs hoop, this time from the foul line extended, gave the Falcons a 12-point advantage, but CMU got an NBA-range three-pointer from Hudson and another triple from Breen. When Cotton hit a layup, it was a four-point game with 4:45 to go.
Puk split a pair of shots at the line, but Hudson hit a long, rainbow three-pointer as the shot-clock buzzer sounded, and it was a two-point game. The Falcons were called for an offensive foul, and Frost's jumper with 2:34 remaining made it a 72-72 game. Then, with 1:03 on the clock, Cotton spun into the lane and hit a short jumper, giving the Chippewas the lead for the first time all day.
On BG's next possession, Moore was called for a foul with 47.4 seconds left, sending Myers to the line. The sophomore made her first toss, but missed the second. But, Tibbs tapped the rebound out to Justinger, who grabbed the ball and was fouled. Justinger split a pair of free throws to tie the game at 74-74.
CMU used most of the clock on the next possession, and Hudson drove in for a layup. But, as the ball went through the hoop, the Central freshman was whistled for an offensive foul, negating the basket and giving possession back to the Falcons with 18.7 seconds left.
Tunstall, who had drawn the offensive foul on Hudson, was fouled by Moore -- Moore's fifth foul -- with 6.8 seconds to go. Tunstall missed her first free-throw try, but made the second, and the Chippewas used a timeout, trailing 75-74.
CMU inbounded the ball from just over midcourt after the timeout, and the Falcons intentionally fouled as soon as the ball was put in play. A pair of fouls put BG at four fouls for the quarter and put the clock at 4.9 seconds left, with CMU inbounding yet again.
This time, however, the ball wound up in the hands of Hudson, who drove down the left side of the lane and put a shot off glass and in as time expired. The officials reviewed the play to confirm that Hudson got her shot off in time, which she had, and the Chippewas had the win.
BGSU led for 37:15 of Saturday's game, while CMU held a lead for only 22 seconds.
Lambert had nine points for the Falcons, and was one of six players -- three for each team -- with three assists on the day. Justinger and Myers each had three steals in the game.
For the hosts, Breen and Presley each went 4-of-5 from three-point land.
The Falcons now return home for the next three contests, beginning with a Wednesday (Feb. 10) matchup with Western Michigan at the Stroh Center. Then, the Brown and Orange will take on Buffalo (Feb. 13) and Toledo (Feb. 17), with the UB matchup part of a BG hoops doubleheader at the Stroh.
