Falcons Shoot a First Round 298 on Monday; Sit in Fourth After 36 Holes of Play

Dallas, Texas – The Bowling Green State University women's golf team recorded team rounds of 298, +18, and 301, +21, on day one of the ORU/SFA Spring Break Invitational on Monday, Mar. 14, to end the day in fourth-place overall at the par-70, 5,800-yards Whitworth Course at the Trophy Club Country Club in Dallas, Texas.
The Falcons' first round of 298 is tied for the seventh lowest 18-hole team score in BGSU women's golf history. BGSU also shot a round of 298 at the Laker Fall Classic during the 2008 fall slate.
With their combined two-round score of 599, +39, the Falcons find themselves just 11 strokes behind the tournament leader in co-host Oral Roberts with their combined 36-hole team score of 588, +28.
"We were extremely pleased with the way we finished both rounds today. All of our players battled through some obstacles early on (in round one) to post one of the best rounds of the season," remarked assistant coach John Powers. "We also saw several late birdies in round two, which will give us momentum heading into the final round."
Pacing the Falcons on Monday was senior Lily Bartell who carded a 72, +2, over first round of play and then finished the day with a 73, +3, on the second round. The senior had two birdies over her first 18 holes of play on day one of the event and then bettered that with three more birdies over the second round of play. The top-Falcon is in a tie for sixth-place overall with a 36-hole score of 145, +5, and just three strokes off the individual lead.
Also posting a round of 73, +3, over the second round of play was freshman Erin Fahey. Coupled with her first round score of 75, +5, the Texas native concluded day one in a tie for 13th-place overall with a combined 36-hole score of 148, +8. The freshman went from recording one birdie on her first round to totaling two birdies over her second set of 18 holes in the afternoon session.
Just three strokes behind Fahey is fellow Falcon Hannah Lewis with her 36-hole score of 151, +11, on Monday. Lewis tallied rounds of 75, +5, and 76, +6, on the first day of play, which included five birdies, to place her in a tie for 24th-place overall heading into the final round of play on Tuesday.
Rounding out the Falcon lineup were juniors Mikayla Baer and Fran Rodriguez. Baer turned in rounds of 78, +8, and 79, +9, to end day one in a tie for 62nd-place overall with a 36-hole score of 157, +17, while Rodriguez recorded rounds of 76, +6, and 84, +14, to sit in a tie for 77th with her two-round combined score of 160, +20. Baer carded one birdie over the second round, while Rodriguez, another Texas native, registered one birdie over her first round.
Behind Oral Roberts and in second-place after day one of play is Houston Baptist University with a 36-hole team score of 589, +29. Arkansas-Little Rock is in third-place at 593, +33, just six shots ahead of the Falcons. Georgetown (604) and Southern Illinois (604) are five strokes behind BGSU and in a tie for fifth-place on the team leaderboard.
The third and final round of play will tee-off tomorrow morning, Mar. 15, at approximately 8 a.m. CST.
