Bowling Green, Ohio – As the 2016 spring season begins to wind down, the Falcons' biggest tournament of the year in the 2016 Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championships will take place this weekend, April 22-24, at the Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville, Indiana.
Hosted by Eastern Michigan University, the three-day, 54-hole championship event will take place at the par 72, 6,194-yards course at the Purgatory Golf Club. Play is scheduled to start all three days with an 8:00 a.m. ET tee-time.
Listed here with the latest Golfstat rankings, the MAC Championship Title will be played for by the following conference teams – Akron (No. 151), Ball State (No. 171), Bowling Green (No. 167), Central Michigan (No. 238), Eastern Michigan (No. 124), Kent State (No. 14), Northern Illinois (No. 148), Ohio (No. 170), Toledo (No. 82) and Western Michigan (No. 146).
"We are looking forward to competing for the MAC Championship down in Noblesville this week," stated head coach Stephanie Young. "Our year round season builds up to this last event. I am excited to see what this team can do after all we have been through this season."
The BGSU lineup for the 2016 MAC Women's Golf Championship is Lily Bartell, Erin Fahey, Mikayla Baer, Hannah Lewis and Fran Rodriguez.
Bartell will tee-off for the Falcons at the No. 1 spot for the fifth straight tournament this weekend, as the senior will be playing in her fourth MAC Championship event. Bartell leads the team with a stroke average of 77.31 on the season overall and has totaled six top-25 place finishes on the year, including five straight over her last five events. The fourth-year Falcon is on pace to post the best career scoring average in BGSU history, as she enters play this weekend with a current career average of 78.26 which is just ahead of the current record of 78.44 held by Shelby Wilson. Coming off a fifth-place finish at the Snowman Classic with a final round 75, +3, Bartell will look to close out her Falcon career on a high note at the conference championships. She placed 12th at the 2013 MAC Championships, 27th at the 2014 tournament and 33rd last year at the 2015 conference tournament.
Making her debut at the MAC Championships this year is Fahey, who will tee-off for Coach Young's squad at the No. 2 slot. The Falcon freshman ranks second on the team with a stroke average of 77.42 over nine stroke play events on the season and went 3-0-1 at the Match Play Challenge to kick-off the spring season. Fahey's freshman year stroke average of 77.42 is on pace to set a new BGSU program record for the lowest season stroke average by a first-year Falcon, eclipsing the current mark of 78.35 set by Susy Grunden during her freshman season in 2009-10. She has recorded five top-25 finishes, including four top-15 finishes. The Texas native finished third overall at the Snowman Classic last time out and also finished in a tie for 13th at the 2015 Rocket Classic over the fall slate. She placed in a tie for 14th at the EKU Colonel Classic and turned in a 15th-place showing at the ORU/SFA Spring Break Invite this spring.
Coming off her best finish of the season with a runner-up performance at the Snowman Classic last weekend, BGSU's Baer will tee-off for the Falcons at the No. 3 spot. Baer, who has played in 10 total events this year for the Falcons, has posted a season stroke average of 78.31 over 26 rounds of stroke play. She has turned in four top-25 place finishes on the year, including her second-place finish at the Snowman Classic last time out. The junior also finished in a tie for ninth at the 2015 Redbird Invitational, to help lead the Falcons to a first-place team finish, and was the top-Falcon golfer with a 14th-place overall showing at the 2015 Cardinal Classic. Baer will be teeing-off in her third straight MAC Championship tournament this weekend having finished in a tie for 32nd in 2014 as a freshman and in tie for 38th last year as a sophomore.
Playing in her second straight MAC Championship Tournament is Lewis, who will be competing for the Falcons at the No. 4 position in the BGSU lineup. A constant in the BGSU lineup during her four year career as a Falcon, Lewis will be teeing-off in her 11th event for the Falcons this year, including the Women's MAC Match Play Challenge event in February. Lewis is third on the team with a stroke average of 78.12 overall, which is a career-best for the senior. She has recorded four top-25 place finishes, including a fourth-place finish at the Snowman Classic last weekend with rounds of 79 and 77 for a combined 36-hole score of 156, +12. The senior will look to improve on her 44th-place finish at last year's 2015 MAC Championships.
At the No. 5 slot in the Falcon lineup is Rodriguez, as the junior is coming off a fifth-place finish at the Snowman Classic last time out on April 16-17. Rodriguez, who is teeing-off for the 10th event overall for the Falcons on the year this weekend, has registered a season stroke average of 79.26 over 23 rounds of play thus far this year and has tallied four top-25 place finishes. The junior will be playing in her first MAC Women's Golf Championship tournament this week.
The Falcons, who have posted two first-place team wins this year with victories at the 2015 Redbird Invitational and at the Snowman Classic, have recorded five top-five team finishes overall on the year and will be looking for the program's first top-five team finish at the MAC Championships since 2001.
Over the last six years, the Falcons as a team have finished in eighth (2010), ninth (2011), tied for eighth (2012), sixth (2013), eighth (2014) and seventh (2015).
Golfstat Live scoring will be used for the Championship. Unofficial scores will be reported every three holes. The four lowest scores of the team will count each day as team total.
