Smith, Wheat Named Vito's Athletes Of The Week

Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Vito's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are baseball player Matt Smith and track and field thrower Makenzie Wheat.

Male Athlete of the Week
Matt Smith, a senior from Johnstown, Ohio, hit .400 with a home run and five RBI, as Bowling Green went 3-1 on the week. The Falcons beat Findlay on March 29, and then earned their first MAC-series win on the season by beating Toledo twice over the weekend, securing Battle of I-75 bragging rights in the process. Smith registered at least one hit and one RBI in all four games, hit a home run in the series-clinching win against Toledo, and recorded two multiple-hit games. In the win over Findlay, Smith went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. On Friday against Toledo, Smith picked up two hits for the second-straight game by going 2-for-4 with an RBI. In Sunday's doubleheader sweep of the Rockets, Smith went 1-for-4 with an RBI in the first game, and then went 1-for-4 in the second game with a home run and two RBI. Smith also scored a run in the series finale.

Makenzie Wheat, a junior from Aurora, Ind., posted the top shot put performance in the MAC this year and had a series that included three other throws that would have ranked among the top four in the conference as she won the event at the Toledo Dual, helping BGSU to a win over its rival for the fourth straight year 111-86. In total, four of Wheat's six throws were further than 15 meters, a mark only two other competitors in the league have hit yet this year. Wheat currently ranks among the top 20 in the region.
