Farrar, Fillis & Witt all earn the league honor
A trio of Bowling Green State University tennis student-athletes have been named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team. Senior Drew Fillis, junior Antonina Farrar and sophomore Emily Witt all made the team, which was announced Tuesday morning (May 17) by the conference office.
Fillis, a native of Toledo, Ohio (Ottawa Hills H.S.), played in all 21 dual matches for the Falcons in 2015-16. After missing nearly all of the '14-15 season due to injury, Fillis competed at the number-three flight in singles for 17 of the 21 duals in her senior year. She teamed up with freshman Paula Comella at the top doubles flight, and that duo ended the season with impressive records of 12-4 in dual-match play and 20-6 overall. Fillis had a combined record of 27-29 as a senior, and she finished her BGSU career with totals of 27 singles wins and 49 doubles victories.
In the classroom, Fillis, an athletic training major, had a cumulative grade-point average of 3.534 at the time of nomination.
Farrar, a native of Perrysburg, Ohio (St. Ursula Academy), was in the lineup for 15 of the team's 21 dual matches, playing four times at the fifth flight and 11 times at the sixth. She was a mainstay in the doubles lineup, competing at the number-three flight all season long. She had a record of 5-3 in singles during the fall portion of the schedule.
Farrar is an inclusive early childhood education major at BGSU, and had a cumulative GPA of 3.291 at the time of nomination.
Witt, a native of Grafton, Ohio (Magnificat H.S.), was in the BGSU lineup for 14 of the 21 duals, and played as high as the third flight. She teamed up with freshman Polina Radeva at the number-two doubles flight, and that tandem teamed up for eight victories on the year. Witt had a 6-5 singles record in the fall, and was 4-6 at the fourth flight during the spring.
In the classroom, Witt is a biology major, and had a cumulative GPA of 3.545 at the time of nomination.
The Academic All-MAC Team honor is bestowed upon a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
Bowling Green, as mentioned, had three student-athletes chosen to the Academic All-MAC Team. As freshmen are not eligible for the award, the Falcons saw three of their four eligible student-athletes earn the honor in 2015-16. Each of the members of the Academic All-MAC Team are now eligible for consideration for the league's Distinguished Scholar-Athlete honor, which will be announced later this month.
