Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's golf team presented its 2015-16 team awards during a recent end of the year team dinner at Nagoya Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi located in Perrysburg, Ohio.
"This evening is a great way to end the season and all be together. We have the chance to slow down to reflect and celebrate the successes, big and small throughout the year," stated head coach Stephanie Young. "Coach Powers and I are very proud of what this team has accomplished this season. We are definitely moving in the right direction as a program."
The 2015-16 team award winners from the women's golf team were:
The Falcons finished the year with five top-five team finishes, highlighted by a two team wins at the 2015 Redbird Invitational and the Snowman Classic, and two fourth-place finishes at the 2015 Cardinal Classic and the 2015 Rocket Classic.
BGSU set a number of program records throughout the year as a team and as individuals. The Falcons 54-hole team score of 901 at the ORU/SFA Spring Break Invitational in March set a new women's golf program record for the lowest 54-hole team tournament score. The Falcons' 901 eclipsed the previous record 54-hole score of 903, which BGSU matched earlier in the season in September at the Cardinal Classic.
The Falcons also carded a team score of 905 over 54 holes of play at the 2015 Redbird Invitational in the fall opener, which at the time was tied for the second-lowest 54-hole team score in BGSU women's golf history.
The team history did not stop there in 2015-16, as the Falcons set two new team records at the 2016 MAC Women's Golf Championships in April. BGSU's 54-hole team score at the championships of 913 marks the lowest 54-hole team score in BGSU's history at the annual MAC Championship event. BGSU's first round of 295 was also the lowest 18-hole team round in Falcons' history at the conference championship tournament.
The 2015-16 squad set a new BGSU team record in single season stroke average with a 307.83 team stroke average of the season, highlighted by career low single season stroke averages from upperclassmen Lewis, Mikayla Baer and Fran Rodriguez.
Individually, Bartell made history becoming the all-time career scoring leader at BGSU finishing her Falcon career out with a 78.23 stroke average over a total of 95 rounds of play. Bartell's career scoring average of 78.23 surpassed the previous record of 78.44 set by fellow Falcon and her former teammate Shelby Wilson.
Fahey's team-low season stroke average of 77.17 was the second lowest single season stroke average in BGSU history, while Bartell's average of 77.31 ranks fourth all-time in the annals of BGSU history. Fahey's single season scoring average in 2015-16 is also the best by a Falcon freshman, beating the previous Falcon low single season scoring average by a first-year Falcon of 78.54 set by Susy Grunden in 2009-10.
Baer posted the lowest round of the season for the Falcons with a round of 71 over the final round of play at the 2015 Redbird Invitational, while Fahey, Bartell, Lewis and Rodriguez each shot at least one round of 72 once on the year.
A total of four Falcons in Rodriguez, Bartell, Lewis and Baer were named to the 2016 Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Academic All-MAC Team, as Bowling Green and Eastern Michigan led the conference with four student-athletes selected to the 2016 squad.
It marks the second Academic All-MAC selection for all four Falcons, who all received the conference academic accolades for the first time last season, while both Bartell and Lewis were made the 2013-14 MAC Academic Honor Roll as well.
Senior Lauren Diehl received recognition from the University for being a Top-10 BGSU senior and was also a recipient of the Leadership Certificate Program.
The BGSU Women's Golf team was also honored with public recognition by the NCAA for scoring in the top-10 percent of Division I programs for their sport in the Academic Progress Rate (APR) again in 2014-15. The 2014-15 recognition marks the fourth straight year and the seventh time overall since Coach Young took over in the spring of 2006 (2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15) that the Falcons have received this national honor.
