Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University Athletics invites fans and the community to join redshirt sophomore Aliyah Gustafson at the Sebo Athletic Center at Doyt Perry Stadium for a sendoff celebration Monday morning. The sendoff will take place at 8:30 am as Gustafson leaves for Oregon for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championships.
The Mid-American Conference shot put champion, Gustafson recovered from an ACL tear 16 months ago to become the premier student-athlete in the conference in the event. She was ranked as the top shot putter in the conference for much of the year and won the league championship on her final throw. She went on to NCAA Regionals, where she snagged the 12th and final spot to the National Championships by breaking the school record with a career-best throw of 53-feet-0.75 – again waiting until her last toss to throw her best. Gustafson entered the regional meet seeded No. 19 but threw more than a foot further than her previous best.
Along with her success in competition, Gustafson excels in the classroom. She was recently named Academic All-MAC and boasts a 3.931 cumulative grade point average.
This will be the fourth consecutive year in which a BGSU student-athlete has advanced to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championships. Brooke Pleger became the department's first female three-time All-American, finishing seventh in the country in the hammer throw in 2013 and then third in both 2014 and 2015.
Gustafson will compete in the shot put Thursday at 9:30 pm ET at historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.
