BGSU earns a top-25 ranking for the eighth time in the last 10 years
The Bowling Green State University women's basketball student-athletes have been recognized for their success in the classroom last year. The Falcons were named to the 2015-16 Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll, which was announced Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 2) by the WBCA office.
The Falcons are ranked 25th in the entire nation on the NCAA Division I list. BGSU is the only Mid-American Conference team on the list, and the Falcons are one of just two Division-I programs from the state of Ohio to earn the honor.
BGSU has been named to the WBCA's Academic Top 25 in each of the last three seasons and eight times in the last 10 years. The other 11 MAC schools have combined to earn the honor just three times in that same 10-year span.
"Our program has been ranked eight out of the last 10 years for their record-setting academic achievement with an average GPA of 3.434 during that span," said BGSU head coach Jennifer Roos. "BGSU is the only program in the Mid-American Conference that can boast that national recognition -- only three other MAC institutions have been recognized once during that same time span.
"This award speaks volumes about the work ethic of the 2015-16 team, in addition to the high academic standard that has become synonymous with our program here at Bowling Green State University."
The WBCA Academic Top 25 recognizes NCAA Division I, II and II; NAIA and junior/community college women's basketball teams across the nation that carry the highest combined grade-point averages inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season. The 2015-16 season is the 21st in which the WBCA has compiled the honor rolls.
The Falcons had a team GPA of 3.446 for the '15-16 campaign. A team's GPA is calculated by dividing the total number of quality points earned by the total number of hours attempted by all team members in the academic terms (semesters or quarters) that the season spans. Weighted grades are converted to a 4.0 scale. The GPA's are rounded to the nearest thousandth of a point. Teams are nominated for the honor by a WBCA-member head coach. A team must have a 3.000 or better GPA to be nominated.
"Congratulations to each of the teams recognized in the 2015-16 WBCA Academic Top 25," said WBCA Executive Director Danielle Donehew. "Their head coaches are to be commended for fostering an environment of excellence for their student-athletes both on the court and, more importantly, in the classroom."
Tuesday's announcement, as mentioned, marks the eighth time in the last decade that the Falcons are in the top 25. BG was ranked 23rd on the 2006-07 list, and the Falcons were fifth in the entire nation in 2008-09. Â BGSU was ranked sixth in '09-10, 11th in '10-11, 24th in 2011-12, 25th two seasons ago and fifth last year.
BGSU has made the list nine times over the last 16 years. No other MAC institution has made the list more than twice in that time.
