BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Despite racking up an aggressive 20 shots, the Bowling Green women's soccer team (2-1) suffered its first loss of the season to Morehead State (1-1) on Thursday evening at home in a 2-1 final.
The first half featured two strong scoring opportunities for both teams, prior to Morehead State's Ashley Ritchie receiving a through ball on a breakaway to put the Eagles up 1-0 in the 27th minute. Ritchie then found the back of the net again in the 51st minute.
Shortly thereafter, freshman Chelsee Washington responded by heading the ball into the goal off of a corner kick opportunity taken by junior Rachel Winters. It was one of four corner kicks that the Falcons benefitted from, resulting in Washington's first career goal.
The Falcons held a strong advantage in shots by a 20-13 mark, with seven landing on goal, while redshirt senior goalkeeper Lauren Cadel stopped four of six shots on goal from the Eagles.
"In the last three games we have created 58 goal scoring opportunties, and we've had 58 shots, but we've only scored three goals," Bowling Green women's soccer head coach Lindsay Basalyga said. "It's a good problem to have in that we are getting it around the 18, and we're creating chances, but we just need to be more clinical. Players need to take ownership in the roles that they're playing and in those moments that there is the potential for a goal."
Other standout performances for the Falcons included junior Skylar Fleak, who tallied a team leading four attempted shots and two shots on goal, while Washington, junior Madison Schupbach and freshman Sam Howshar each marked three shots on the night.
Up next, the Falcons will remain at home as they welcome Oakland to Cochrane Field for non-conference competition on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 2:30 p.m.
