Falcons Complete First-Day Action At The Greater Cincinnati Invitational

Mason, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University tennis team is off to a successful start at the Greater Cincinnati Invitational hosted by Northern Kentucky University and the University of Dayton.
Due to weather the invitational was delayed halting singles play, and doubles play never began.
"I am so proud of how we competed and fought hard for every point," Head Coach Stephanie Dalmacio said. "It's not easy to keep pushing through after such long hours on the court. I saw how much this team wants to win and how much they appreciate each other. I couldn't ask for anything else from them."
Singles play started Friday morning at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. Freshmen Marharita-Sophia Tavpash, Anna Kholodnaya and Ayumi Saski all capturing their first collegiate wins for the Orange and Brown. Also victorious on the court were junior Emily Witt and sophomore Polina Radeva.
In flight one, sophomore Paula Comella bounced back after suffering a first round loss by taking down Valeria Lavrenchuck of IUPUI, 8-1. Comella will face Valpo's Kathlen Hebble for a chance to reach the consolation final.
Tavpash came away with two singles victories on the day in flight two. Tavpash earned her first win against Dayton's Alex Townsend, 6-2, 6-3 and picked up her second after edging Aishwarya Kona of Duquesne, 7-5, 6-4. Tavpash will take on Vanina Iordanova of Xavier for an opportunity to play in the flight two championship.
In the first round of flight three, Radeva defeated Rachel Swartwood of IUPUI in straight sets 7-5, 6-2. Radeva faced Akron's Luisa Echeverry in the second round. She dropped the first set 6-3, came back to win the second set 6-2, but lost the tiebreaker, 10-0.
Kholodnaya made quick work in flight four, she won in straight sets against Sara Sherif of IUPUI, 6-4, 6-4, in the first round. Kholodnoya fell in the second set to EKU's Marguex Lecroix, 6-7(1), after having won the first set, 6-2. She clinched the match in the tiebreaker, 10-6. Also in flight four was Saski who defeated Daria Pentsova of Evansville 6-7(5), 6-3, 10-3 in the first round.
In flight five, Witt defeated Marina Marti of EKU, 7-5, 6-4 in round one. Up a set 6-4 in the second round, Witt would eventually drop the next two sets 6-3, 10-3 to UIC's Stefana Vasic.
The Falcons will begin play tomorrow at 9 a.m. at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.
