FINAL RESULTS
OREGON, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University men's and women's cross country teams began their 2016 seasons by competing against their arch-rivals in the 2016 Toledo Invitational. The dual meet included the University of Toledo Rockets and was held at Pearson Metropark on Friday, Sept. 2 in Oregon, Ohio.
Â
For BGSU, the men's 5,000-meter race included five official Falcon runners, all of whom either posted personal bests or competed in their first collegiate 5K. The top two runners for BGSU were sophomores Jonathan Wenning and Noah Schaub. Wenning took third place with a personal-best time of 15:42.7; that beat his previous best by more than 30 seconds. Schaub crossed the finish just 1.2 seconds later in fourth place. His time (15:43.9) was also more than 30 seconds better than his previous personal record.
Â
Juniors Kohl Taberner and Nick Voth also finished in the top ten and posted personal records. Taberner's time of 15:44.5 was good for fifth place. His previous record, in the 2014 Toledo Invitational, was 16:20.10. Voth earned eighth place in 15:57.8. Like Taberner, his previous record occurred in the 2014 Toledo race.
Â
Jacob Schenten crossed the finish line after 16:48.8 in his first collegiate 5K. Meanwhile, freshmen Aaron Peters (16:34.0) and Raymond Berling (16:35.5) ran unattached in their first collegiate event.
Â
The women's 5,000-meter race took place immediately after, and redshirt sophomore Cassandra Boyle posted BGSU's best official time (17:56.7). It was a personal-best for Boyle, beating her previous mark of 18:53.90. Boyle placed sixth, just ahead of Rebecca Schott, who crossed the line in ninth place (18:07.4). Schott also earned a new personal best.
Â
"Cassie Boyle had a nice race, especially with it being her first time in a BGSU uniform in the fall," said head coach Lou Snelling.
Â
Four others competed officially for the Falcons. Rachel Durbin completed the run in 19:11.1, while Jody Musser posted a time of 19:21.2. Kelsie Mothersead ran her first collegiate event and finished in 19:15.9, and Allison Francis (20:18.5) rounded out the action.
Â
Becca Rae ran unattached and earned second place in 17:34.9. Elena Lancioni (18:37.1) and Allison Holahan (19:27.9) also ran unattached. It was Holahan's first collegiate race.
Â
"We need to apply what we learned today for the Mel Brodt," Snelling said. "Having this first meet under our belt and adding a few more into the racing mix will help us take that next step."
Â
In overall team results, Toledo defeated BGSU in the men's race 25-32, while the Rockets downed the Falcons 16-46 in the women's race.
Â
Both teams return to action in two weeks, when the Falcons host the Mel Brodt Collegiate Invitational. That event will be held at Forrest Creason Golf Club in Bowling Green, Ohio. The first race is scheduled to begin at 6:30 pm on Friday, Sept. 16.
