BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Bowling Green women's soccer team (6-5-0, 1-2-0 MAC) hit the road for conference play for the first time this season as it took on Buffalo (4-5-2, 1-2-0 MAC) at UB stadium. In Mid-American Conference play Friday evening, the Falcons fell to the Bulls in a 2-0 final.
Just 8:22 into the matchup, Buffalo was able to get past freshman goalkeeper Kathleen Duwve with a header taken off a corner kick opportunity. It was one of the Bulls seven corner kicks, compared to just two taken by the Falcons on the night.
"I told the team before the game that whichever team took ahold of the game in the first 10 minutes would probably take the points on the night," Bowling Green women's soccer head coach Lindsay Basalyga said. "Buffalo came out flying and scored an early goal, and for the first the first time all year we never really found our rhythm. With that being said, the team continued competing through the final whistle."
Duwve ultimately faced 13 attempted shots while three landed on net, earning the Sylvania, Ohio native three saves in her fifth start of the season.
Offensive efforts by junior Skylar Fleak, redshirt sophomore Erica Hubert, sophomore Morgan Abbitt and senior Alexa Cheripko led to a total of five shots attempted by the Bowling Green squad. Fleak, Hubert and Cheripko's shots each landed on net, earning the Falcons a .600 shot on goal percentage.
60 minutes into the conference matchup, Buffalo's leading scorer Carissima Cutrona struck the back of the net after finding a cross pass low in front of the goal, to tally her seventh of the season and lift the Bulls to a 2-0 lead.
Overall, the Falcons were disciplined by keeping to just four fouls on the night and went offsides on just one occasion, in comparison to Buffalo, who committed four fouls and five offsides.
"We need to put this one behind us and move on quickly with a big game against Akron on Sunday," Coach Basalyga added.
The Bowling Green women's soccer program will round out the weekend's action on the road by taking on MAC foe Akron Sunday afternoon. It is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
