Falcons Roll On First Day Of Thundering Herd Invitational
January 27, 2017 | Women's Track and Field
Huntington, W.Va. – The Bowling Green State University track and field team competed in just three events on the first day of Marshall's Thundering Herd Invitational, but the Falcons won one event and had two student-athletes etch their names in the BGSU record books.
Redshirt sophomore Rachel Walny won the 5000 with the second-fastest time in BGSU history, while freshman Chasatea Brown scored 3,285 points in the pentathlon to rank fourth all-time in school history.
Walny was part of a dominant performance for the Falcons as BGSU took the top two spots among 43 competitors in the 5000. Walny's time of 16:46.27 was a Mid-American Conference automatic qualifying time and was less than six seconds shy of the school record. Redshirt junior Rebecca Schott finished as runner-up with a career-best time of 17:26.76. Schott medaled in the outdoor 10,000 a year ago at the MAC Championships, placing seventh in the conference.
Competing in the pentathlon at the collegiate level for the first time in school history, Brown placed seventh overall and her 3,285 points have been surpassed by only three other Falcons in program history. Among the 18 competitors in the pentathlon, her best result was a second place finish in the long jump at 17-feet-2.25. She was fifth in the 60 hurdles at 9.10 seconds and sixth in the 800 in 2:29.56.
Raven Porter also competed in the long jump with a mark of 18-2.5. It was her second-best performance of the year in the event.
"Both Rachel and Chasatea had great effort, competing in their primary events for the first time this year," BGSU Track and Field Coach Lou Snelling said. "It will be really exciting to see where they go from here."
BGSU will be back in action for day two of the Thundering Herd Invitational Saturday. The throws team will compete at Findlay Saturday.
