YPSILANTI, MICH. -- For the second consecutive Friday, the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team allowed a game-winning goal with less than 4:00 displayed on the clock. This time, the Falcons permitted a golden goal to Eastern Michigan's Peyton Davis with 2:54 remaining in double overtime. It was the team's first foray into extra time in 2017. The defeat drops BGSU's record to 7-5-0 overall and 2-3-0 in Mid-American Conference play.
Sophia Barnes opened the day's scoring in the 23rd minute with her second goal of 2017. She played Erica Hubert into the box, and Hubert passed it back to give Barnes an open look. The assist was Hubert's first of the season. Goalkeeper Victoria Cope kept EMU off the board in the first half with two tough saves, including one in the 33rd minute that she tipped over the crossbar.Â
A tackle in the box within the first minute of the second half prevented a second BGSU goal, and missed opportunities would haunt the Falcons. Kennady Kuhlman pitched in a header for the equalizer off a Peyton Davis cross in the 66th minute. From there, neither team could score for the remainder of regulation or the first ten minutes of overtime. The Falcons took 11 shots within the second half and the first overtime, but only two of those reached goaltender Kaylin Williams, who saved both. Williams made another save early in the second extra frame, and that was BGSU's final shot. Minutes later, Davis tapped in the winner off a Cope save that she could not corral.
COACH SAYS...
After the game, head coach Matt Fannon said, "We were not good enough tonight for the full match. We allowed them to get a foothold in the game and were not willing to fight when we needed to. We are very disappointed."
