Madison Schupbach and Maureen Kennedy added their eighth assists.Â
SCOUTING KENT STATE
After a 4-3-2 start in non-conference play, Kent State dominated the MAC for a second straight year with nine wins in 11 games. The Flashes allowed a total of seven goals and won seven shutouts, only dropping games to #2 seed Ball State (1-0) and #4 seed BGSU (3-1). Against #8 seed Ohio in the MAC quarterfinals, KSU and the Bobcats fought to a 1-1 draw through double overtime. The match went to penalty kicks, and the Golden Flashes advanced by winning that portion, 4-2.
Freshman Vital Kats leads KSU with six goals. She scored in her first two career games and added a critical goal in the Flashes' quarterfinal victory over Ohio. She allso has four assists for a team-best 16 points. Fellow freshman Isabelle Mihail has four goals and two assists, including KSU's lone goal in a 3-1 loss to BGSU in October. FALCONS VS. FLASHES IN THE POSTSEASON
Bowling Green and Kent State have met twice in the MAC Tournament. In 2004, the Falcons earned the eighth seed and traveled to Kent for a quarterfinal match against the top-seeded Flashes. Britt Anderson scored in double overtime to give BGSU a 2-1 upset victory. The Falcons went on to beat Central Michigan and Western Michigan to capture their first MAC championship. In 2005, the Falcons were the top seed and hosted #7 Kent State at Cochrane Stadium in the championship game. The game was a scoreless draw, but the Falcons won the title with a 3-2 victory in penalty kicks.
HOORAY FOR HUBERT
Junior Erica Hubert found a perfect time for her first multi-goal match of the 2017 season. She scored twice and led the Falcons to a 3-1 MAC quarterfinal win over Buffalo. Her initial score was the equalizer, and she capped her day with a goal in the 80th minute that gave BGSU a two-goal lead. The "insurance goal" has been a Hubert specialty this year; of her ten goals, six of them have been the Falcons' final scores in two-goal victories. Four have occurred in the final 11 minutes of a match. Hubert has also been BGSU's own "Ms. October", as she has seven goals in nine games this month and five in the last four. Bowling Green is 8-1 when she scores a goal this season.
CHELSEE IN CHARGE
Chelsee Washington played an enormous role in Bowling Green's 3-1 win against MAC Eastern Division champion Kent State. In the 37th minute, Washington headed in a diagonal pass from Alexis Fricke to put the Falcons ahead 1-0. It was the first goal scored against KSU in 541:08. After the Golden Flashes evened the match in the second half, Washington drilled in a shot from 15 yards out off a pass from Marissa Swindell. The goal served as the eventual game-winner, which was the first of her career. She is the first player to score twice against KSU in 2017, and her two goals equal the total scored against KSU in their first nine MAC games. Washington's two goals were her only two shots of the game in 39 minutes as a primary reserve..
FANTASTIC FLEAKÂ
Senior forward Skylar Fleak is having one of the best offensive seasons in BGSU history. Against Buffalo, she posted her second hat trick of 2017 with three goals in 20:16, the fourth-fastest hat trick by a Falcon, as BGSU came back from 2-0 down to beat Buffalo. Her first hat trick was a four-goal game at Oakland. She added an assist in a 2-0 win over Akron for a seven-point weekend. She has 11 goals and 27 points (each third-most in BGSU history) and a personal-best five assists. She is second in the MAC in points and goals, and she ranks in the top 35 nationally for both. In her career, Fleak has 27 goals (third most at BGSU) and 64 points (fourth most at BGSU). Her efforts have earned three MAC Offensive Player of the Week awards in 2017.
