Ten Falcons Named to 2017 Academic All-MAC Team
November 16, 2017 | Women's Soccer
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team set a new program standard for academic excellence this season. Ten members of the team were named members of the 2017 Academic All-MAC team, as announced by the conference office on Thursday morning (Nov. 16). The current standards for the award were implemented in the 2014 season. The previous high for the Falcons was eight honorees in 2015.
Seniors Madison Schupbach and Rachel Winters earned a spot on the team for the third consecutive season. Fellow senior Jennifer Reyes is part of the team for the second straight year, as are juniors Morgan Abbitt and Alexis Fricke. In addition, senior Elisa Baeron, juniors Laura Bozzelli and Victoria Cope, and sophomores Maureen Kennedy and Chelsee Washington were all honored for the first time.
The ten Falcons are part of a group of 120 student-athletes from across the conference to earn a spot on the Academic All-MAC team. Three of Bowling Green's ten carry a perfect 4.0 grade point average. The Falcons are tied with Toledo and Kent State for most in the conference. There are a total of 17 student-athletes on the team with 4.0 GPAs.
BGSU women's soccer head coach Matt Fannon said, "Achieving in the classroom as well as in sport is something that only very driven people can accomplish. I am proud of our student-athletes who consistently excel both on and off the field."
The Academic All-MAC team honors student-athletes who excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for their respective sport. Freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible. Members of the Academic All-MAC team are eligible to receive the MAC's Distinguished Scholar Athlete Award, which will be announced in December.
