Thirteen Falcons Named To Cross Country Academic All-MAC Teams

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Falcons men's and women's cross country teams saw thirteen athletes named to the Mid-American Conference Cross Country All-MAC team this year, as announced Tuesday, Nov. 21. The men's team had eight athletes honored while the women named five.
The five women named Academic All-MAC include graduate student Rachel Durbin, senior Elena Lancioni, redshirt-junior Rachel Walny, redshirt-sophomore Kelsie Mothersead and redshirt-freshman Allison Holahan.
Durbin is pursuing a graduate degree in sport administration. She maintains an overall GPA of 3.426 and competed in all six meets for the orange and brown this season.
Lancioni, in her senior year, holds a 3.923 GPA and is studying exercise science. She competed in all six meets for the Falcons including a fourth place finish and first among Falcons at the Mel Brodt Invitational.
Walny, who holds a 3.99 GPA and studies exercise science, was named MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week twice this season (Sept. 20 & Oct. 4). She also earned MAC Runner of the Week honors (Sept. 19) following her first place finish at the Spartan Invitational. To conclude her redshirt-junior season, Walny placed 19th at the Great Lakes Regional competition, earning her All-Region honors for the third consecutive year.
Mothersead holds a 3.952 GPA and is majoring in exercise science. Competing in all six meets for the Falcons in 2017.
Holahan, a biology major, holds a 4.0 GPA during her time at Bowling Green State University. This season she competed in three of six races for the Falcons.
The men boast an astonishing eight athletes named to the Academic All-MAC team for the second consecutive year. Seniors Jacob Schenten, Kohl Taberner and Nick Voth were joined by juniors Paul Garbarino, Tyler Phillips, Noah Schaub and Jonathan Wenning and redshirt-freshman Raymond Berling in being honored for their academic accomplishments.
Schenten, a senior exercise science major, holds a 3.674 GPA during his time as a Falcon and competed in all six meets this season.
Taberner, who studies political science while maintaining a 3.592 overall GPA also recorded a strong final season with the Falcons, competing in all six meets.
Voth holds a 4.0 GPA through four years at BGSU while majoring in human movement sport and leisure studies. He competed in five of six meets for the Falcons.
Garbarino, a multiplatform journalism major, holds an overall GPA of 3.917 and competed in five of six races for BGSU this season.
Phillips, who competed in all six meets for BGSU this season, holds a 3.343 GPA and is majoring in sport management.
Schaub, a junior pre-exercise science major, has an overall GPA of 3.392. He competed in all six meets, leading the men's team to one of their best seasons in over 20 years. Schaub was named MAC Runner of the Week on Oct. 17 following his tenth place finish at the Pre-Nationals Invitational. It was his first career MAC Runner of the Week honor.
Wenning, a supply chain management major with a GPA of 3.375, competed in all six meets for the Falcons in 2017.
Berling, in his first season with the Falcons, competed in four of six meets. An adolescence to young adult education major, he holds a GPA of 3.741.
The 13 Falcons athletes named to the Academic All-MAC teams is tied for third most in the MAC, behind Ohio (15) and Toledo and Miami (14). Miami (OH) also boasts 13. With eight men named to the team, BGSU is tied with Central Michigan for most male athletes honored.
The Falcons also saw the second career Academic All-MAC honor for seven of the 13. Durbin, Mothersead, Garbarino, Phillips, Schaub, Schenten and Wenning all earned their first during the 2016 season. Lancioni, Walny, Taberner and Voth have all earned the honor three times in their careers (2015, 2016 and 2017).
With two athletes recording 4.0 GPAs (Holahan and Voth), Bowling Green is tied with Miami (OH), Ohio and Western Michigan for most in the conference.
