Baylis, Gustafson Named Jet's Pizza Athletes of the Week
December 11, 2017 | General, Ice Hockey, Women's Track and Field
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Jet's Pizza Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are hockey's Stephen Baylis and track and field's Aliyah Gustafson.
Male Athlete of the Week
Junior forward Stephen Baylis is now on a two-game scoring streak, and has tallied points in seven of the last 10 games after his performance against Alabama Huntsville this past weekend. On Friday, the Ottawa, Ontario native tied the game up at 2-2 in the final minutes of the first period with his second shorthanded goal of the season, while on Saturday, he followed it up with a power play goal. As he scored with the man advantage on Saturday, it broke the Falcons five-game power play drought, and extended the Falcons lead to 3-0. Offensively, while Baylis helped the Falcons tally a season-high of 42 shots on goal against Alabama Huntsville, he went a plus-3 on ice as he was out for all three of the Bowling Green goals, helping them to extend its unbeaten streak to five. On the weekend, Baylis earned one shorthanded goal, one power play goal, three shots on goal, and three blocked shots in addition to marking a plus-4 rating on the ice.
Female Athlete of the Week
Aliyah Gustafson, a redshirt senior from Iowa City, Iowa, won both of her events at the 2017 Bowling Green Opener. She competed in both the weight throw and shot put, earning victories with distances of 18.95m (62-02.25) in the weight throw and 16.35m (53-07.75) in the shot put. The shot put mark broke her own school record (16.33m), which she set at the 2017 MAC Indoor Championships. In addition, Gustafson earned automatic qualifying bids to the 2018 MAC Indoor Championships in both events.
