BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's golf program and head coach Stephanie Young have inked three future Falcons to National Letters of Intent, the program announced Wednesday (Dec. 13) afternoon.
Erin Korn (Powell, Ohio / Bishop Watterson), Kelsey Sager (Toledo, Ohio / St. Ursula Academy) and Katie Whitfield (Clemson, S.C. / D.W. Daniel) will join the program for the 2018-19 season.
"We are so excited to add this 2018 class to the Falcon Family! All three of these young women are outstanding students and athletes," commented Young. "This class will make the team stronger as soon as they step on campus. They have a passion for the game with an inner drive to work hard and continue to get better each and every day."
Korn is a four-year letterwinner out of Bishop Watterson High School, playing for coach Debbie Weis. Korn is the team's captain this year as a senior. She is a National Honors Society member, and has earned a spot on the honor roll.
Korn was named Honorable Mention All-Central District in 2016 and 2017, as well as being an All-Ohio Scholar Athlete in 2016 and 2017. She has earned her school's sportsmanship and scholar awards, as well.
"Erin brings a focus and work ethic to our team that will really be contagious. She knows what it takes to be successful both on and off the course, and this will help her transition to the college level," said Young.
Sager has earned three varsity letters at St. Ursula Academy in Toledo for coach Jim McGowan. Sager went undefeated in conference play across her career, and has posted scoring averages of 84.63 (2016) and 83.30 (2017) over her final two seasons. Sager has earned All-District and All-Conference accolades in each of her years at St. Ursula. This season, Sager led the Arrows to a 219-10 record. She led her team to a conference title, district title and sectional title all three years.
Academically, Sager has earned the AP Scholar Award, while being named to the President's and Dean's List, as well as earning a spot on the honor roll. Sager is a part of the National Honors Society.
"Kelsey is going to be a tremendous asset to our program," continued Young. "Coming from St. Ursula Academy, she has been a part of a winning culture for many years and those experiences will only help her continue to get better in the future. She is an outstanding student, has great athleticism and is an exceptional driver of the golf ball."
Whitfield, incredibly, has earned five varsity letters for coaches Andy Swords, Russ Roark and Bill Wilson at D.W. Daniel High School. Whitfield has led her school to four regional championships, and team finishes no lower than the top four at the state tournament all five years. Whitfield is a two-time All-State selection, and a three-time Region Player of the Year.
Whitfield averaged a 73 this past season for 18 holes, while averaging a 74 in the two seasons prior. A two-time captain for the Lions, Whitfield earned spots on the All-Region Team in both of her first two seasons on varsity.
"Katie is a fierce competitor and will come in with a lot of tournament experience," said Young. "She has won at the highest level and is ready for the challenges of college golf. Her drive to excel and excitement for the game will make an immediate impact on our program."
