BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team set five personal records and won two individual events, but they could not overcome New Hampshire during a 194.700-193.850 defeat on Saturday (Feb. 11) at Anderson Arena.
Â
The Falcons continued to build on their team success in three of the four events. They defeated New Hampshire on the vault, the balance beam and the floor exercise. Their beam and floor team scores were the best of the 2017 season to date, and their vault score was the second-highest. However, the uneven bars continue to be a struggle.
"Vault, beam and floor were solid today. We continue to build strong scores on these events. Unfortunately, the team was unable to put together a strong uneven bars rotation. It is disappointing that we could not complete four strong events today when this team is perfectly capable of achieving that task. We will continue to work on this lineup," said BGSU head coach Kerrie Turner. "I am pleased we were able to highlight We Are One Team, the LGBTQ community and international students at our competition."
Â
Bowling Green began the meet with the vault and immediately produced a 48.950, while four individuals finished among the top six scores. Freshman superstar Jovannah East topped all other vaulters by leaping to a 9.850. Lauren Feely tied for second place with another strong vault that earned a 9.825. Lauren DeMeno and Randi Morris tied for fourth with a 9.800.
Â
The uneven bars were the obstacle for BGSU during the second rotation. Neither team fared well on the apparatus, but the Falcons lost the event after notching only 47.075. Laura Mitchell was the team's top scorer and earned second place with a 9.700, while Alex Johnston also finished in the top half of the individual standings (9.550). Lexi Augustine set a personal record in her first action since 2017's opening meet.
Â
BGSU was at their best during the second half at the meet. The Falcons competed on the uneven bars during the third rotation and earned a season-best team score of 49.000. That is BGSU's second 49.000+ event score of the season. East and fellow freshman Taylor Worthington both set new personal records and finished in a three-way tie for first after posting a pair of 9.875s. India McPeak rebounded with a 9.825 and finished fourth.
Â
The Falcons concluded the meet with a season-best performance during the floor exercise. The team's score 48.825, which eclipsed the previous high of 48.750 from the Metroplex Invitational. India McPeak and Laura Mitchell tied BGSU's highest individual floor exercise scores of the season as each scored a 9.825, while Kayla Rose and Randi Morris both added 9.800s. McPeak and Morris' scores earned new personal records, and both Rose and Mitchell equaled their personal bests.
Â
In six meets, East has now competed 12 times and has finished with the top score in half of those events. She has ten scores of 9.800 or better and now owns an overall season average of 9.806 and a vault season average of 9.833.
Â
Worthington, the Falcons' other top scorer on Saturday, has posted the top balance beam score in back-to-back meets.
Â
BGSU's loss drops the team's overall record to 1-11. The team will return to action at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18 when they host the Ball State Cardinals in a Mid-American Conference dual meet. The event at Anderson Arena will serve as Bowling Green's 2017 Pink Meet, as the Falcons will highlight the importance of the fight against breast cancer.
