BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday (Feb. 11), as the University at Buffalo downed the Falcons by a score of 88-74. Buffalo shot 63.5 percent (33-of-52) from the field, and had four players score in double figures.
With the loss, Bowling Green falls to 11-14 overall, and 5-7 in Mid-American Conference play. Buffalo has now won four-straight games by at least 10 points. The win pushes the Bulls' record to 13-12 (7-5 MAC).
Freshman Dylan Frye scored 20 points and registered a career-high seven rebounds. Frye went 8-for-14 from the field, and 4-for-7 from downtown. Frye has now scored 20-plus points in two games this season. Frye also had a steal in the game, and did not commit any turnovers.
Bowling Green led, 42-39, at the half, despite Buffalo shooting 72.7 percent from the floor. The second half began with nine lead changes, before a huge Buffalo run put the game out of reach.
The Orange and Brown took a 53-52 lead with 14:58 to go in regulation, but Buffalo then went on a 19-2 run, which culminated in a dunk that gave the Bulls a 71-55 advantage with 9:05 remaining.
Frye sparked an 8-0 run for the Falcons with a pair of three-balls, drawing Bowling Green within 11 points with 5:22 to go in the game. However, Buffalo scored the next six points to close the game out.
Bowling Green tied its season high with 11 made three-pointers, as the Falcons made 11-of-23 attempts from three-point range. The Falcons shot 43.8 percent (28-of-64) for the game. Buffalo (17-of-26) made 10 more free throws than Bowling Green (7-of-13).
The Falcons forced 19 Buffalo turnovers, and scored 18 points off those turnovers. The Falcons also had more second-chance points (12-8), more fast-break points (9-8) and more bench points (32-13). Buffalo outrebounded the Falcons, 37-28, and scored 48 points in the paint, while holding BGSU to 22 paint points.
Senior Zack Denny was the only other Falcon in double figures. He scored 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting. He went a perfect 2-for-2 from three-point range. Denny added three steals, two rebounds and two assists. Sophomore Demajeo Wiggins had seven points, eight rebounds and two assists.
Senior Ismail Ali posted eight points, three assists and three steals. Sophomore Antwon Lillard scored seven points, and notched two rebounds, two assists and two steals. Senior Wes Alcegaire had seven points and two steals. Freshman Rodrick Caldwell finished with eight points on 2-of-4 shooting from deep.
Bowling Green will play a pair of road games next week at Western Michigan (Feb. 14) and Ohio (Feb. 18). The Falcons will then return home to face Akron at the Stroh Center on Feb. 21.
