Blumington, IN – Day one of the 2017 NCAA Zones Championships has come to an end. Falcon divers Claire Stam and Talisa Lemke represented the program in the 3-meter event.
Freshman, Talisa Lemke qualified for the finals of the 3-meter event in 16th place. The Falcon finished in 18th place after the final round with a 517.30 final score. Competing at the NCAA Zones Championships for the second year in a row was Claire Stam. Last season in the 3-meter event, Stam placed 46th with a 197 score. This year, the Falcon improved tremendously by placing 25th with a final score of 239.
First year head diving coach and BGSU hall of famer, Phil Koester, made a few coments on the divers' performance. Coach stated: "Today two Falcon Divers competed on the 3 Meter springboard at the NCAA Zone C Qualifying Meet in Bloomington, IN. This is the final leg before reaching the 2017 NCAA Championships that will be held in Indianapolis later this month. Zone C is considered one of the toughest of the five in the country. It contains many of the Big 10 schools Louisville, Kentucky and strong independent programs like Notre Dame. Many former and future Olympians were seen competing today. Steele Johnson of Purdue who finished second in the 1 meter event. Jessica Peratta of Indiana, who also finished second today on 3 meter behind Pei Lin of Miami University, the reigning MAC Champion on both boards. Our own Falcon diver, Freshman Talisa Lemke qualified 16th after prelims. Her 6 dive total was 262.35, good enough to move her into the finals where she finished in 18th place with a cumulative score of 517.30. Talisa is a native of Berlin, Germany and has been a huge influence to our roster. Sophomore, Claire Stam competed in her second Zone competition fir BGSU, finishing in 25th, up from 31st position last year. The Grand Rapids native continues to improve and adds a bunch of depth for this years squad. These two divers are becoming the cornerstone to a team that will begin delivering more diving points in the MAC, but also at the National level."
Second year head coach for the women's swimming and diving program, Matt Ense commented "It was special to see two BGSU divers on deck today and for Claire and Talisa to do so well and finish among the best in the country while they are only in their first and second year was impressive. It was amazing to see Claire Stam make so many strides this year with making a huge impact in the dual meet season. To make a breakthrough and score at conference was huge, but to see her score a 239 today with such hard judging was neat. To see her finish 21 places higher than last year's Zone meet and score 42 more points was incredible. Talisa was only one of a few freshmen to earn six extra dives today and make it back to the finals."
The Falcons have one more day of competition before closing the 2016-17 season for the BGSU swimming and diving program. The 1-meter event is scheduled for tomorrow starting at 1PM. Keep up with your Falcons as they take on their last meet of the season.
