May 04, 2017 | Women's Track and Field
Toledo, Ohio – Battling a heavy downpour throughout the afternoon, the Bowling Green State University outdoor track and field team won two of the three events contested Thursday on the first day of the Toledo Invitational.
The Falcons swept the top three spots in the discus, with Elizabeth Iversen leading the way with a throw of 144-feet-2. Aliyah Gustafson was just four inches behind in second place and Kayla Velasquez placed third at 136-4.
In the shot put, Bowling Green took both of the top two spots as Gustafson took her turn atop the podium. She won the event with a throw of 49-0.25 and Makenzie Wheat was second at 47-6.25. Iversen placed fourth at 44-0.75.
The only other event of the day was the hammer throw and, while the Falcons did not earn another first-place finish, the team took three of the top five spots. Kaila Butler was third at 178-4 and Velasquez was fourth at 174-10. Iversen finished fifth overall with a throw of 164-8.
The rain is expected to be a factor again Friday, but the Falcons will take part in day two of the Toledo Invitational. It will be the final day of tune-up for the team before the Mid-American Conference Championships, hosted by Western Michigan, May 11-13.
