TUCSON, Ariz. – Freshman center fielder Jake Wilson, a member of the Bowling Green State University baseball team, was named a Freshman All-American by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, the national publication announced Wednesday (June 7) afternoon. Wilson becomes BGSU's fourth Freshman All-American, joining Len Elias (1999), Tyler Saneholtz (2002), and Zac Carey (2015).
"Our program could not be more proud of Jake Wilson," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "Just to find your way onto the field in any consistent form is not easy to do as a freshman. He has a great work ethic, and I'm happy that he is being rewarded for the great season that he had. His name is right there with the best freshmen in the country."
Wilson continues to haul in the most prestigious awards for freshmen. On May 23, he was named the Mid-American Conference's Freshman of the Year, becoming the first Falcon freshman since former Major Leaguer Andy Tracy earned the same honor in 1993.
Bowling Green's center fielder was the only position player from the MAC to be named to the team. Wilson, amazingly, was able to surpass the high expectations that Falcon fans had for him coming into the season. After being drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 2016 MLB Draft, he was named the MAC's Preseason Freshman of the Year by D1Baseball.com and Baseball America.
The New Lowell, Ontario, Canada native led all MAC freshmen with a .305 batting average on the season, which also led the team. His team-high 31 RBI were also tops in the league amongst freshmen, and were the most RBI recorded by a true freshman at Bowling Green since Jon Berti registered 34 in 2009. The rookie also led the Falcons with eight (8-for-11) stolen bases and a .387 on-base percentage.
Wilson, who scored 19 runs and ranked second on the team with 57 hits, recorded 18 hits over the final six games of the season, hitting .621 (18-for-29) over that time with multiple hits in each ballgame. He went 8-for-10 in the final series of the year at Elon. The freshman, who had five doubles and one home run, posted a .978 fielding percentage, while playing and starting in 48 of Bowling Green's 49 games in center field.
On May 12, in the last MAC series of the season, Wilson went 4-for-5 at the plate, and recorded BG's final three RBI. He tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with a two-out single, and then hit a walk-off single in the 10th to give the Falcons a 4-3 win over Western Michigan.
Wilson tied for second on the club with six multiple-RBI games, and led the Falcons with 17 multiple-hit ballgames. He drew 18 walks on the season, and struck out just 24 times.
