Cauli Bedran Hired As Falcons' New Assistant Swim Coach
August 15, 2017 | Women's Swimming & Diving
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University swimming and diving team and head coach Matt Ense have announced the addition of Cauli Bedran as Assistant Swim Coach for the 2017-18 season.
Ense said, "Cauli clearly stood out from the other talented candidates. He had tremendous success as a student-athlete and had great results with the student-athletes he has coached. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, and his on-deck personality will help our program move up in the Mid-American Conference."
Bedran arrives at BGSU following one season as head swimming and diving coach at Olivet University. Under Bedran's leadership, the men's and women's teams finished fifth and sixth, respectively, at the MIAA Championships in February 2017. Each team secured a pair of meet victories during the regular season, and both competed at the Carthage (Wis.) Winter Classic last December.
Prior to his time at Olivet, Bedran spent six years as a graduate assistant coach at Wayne State University while he pursued his Ph.D. in comparative politics.
Bedran also competed as a four-year letterwinner for the WSU swimming and diving team during his time as an undergraduate student. He earned 24 All-American awards in that time, seventeen of which were first-team honors. He won two individual GLIAC championships as a senior, in the 50 and 100 freestyle events. He also helped WSU win seven GLIAC relay championships and NCAA championships in the 200 medley relay (2008) and the 400 medley relay (2009).
Wayne State finished as the national runner-up at the 2009 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships. It was the team's best finisher ever at the national meet. They also earned a third place finish during Bedran's career. As a result of his achievements, he was enshrined in the Wayne State University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016.
Bedran said, "I am excited and humbled to join the BGSU family and the swimming and diving program. The school is fantastic academically, and the team has dedicated and driven young ladies who really want to be successful. I will strive to help Matt (Ense) and the team reach their goals."
Bedran is a native of Rio de Janiero, Brazil. He joins a coaching staff led by Matt Ense, who enters his third season at the helm of the Falcons' swimming and diving program. During the 2016-17 season, Ense led BGSU to a 6-6 mark during the regular season, a fourth place finish out of ten teams at the Miami Invitational, and a sixth place finish at the 2017 Mid-American Conference Championships.
