BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team will complete its 2017 non-conference slate on Friday (Sept. 15) when it hosts the Robert Morris University Colonials. The Falcons' match against the invaders from the Northeast Conference will kick off at 7:00 p.m. at Cochrane Stadium.
BGSUÂ seeks to improve to 5-2-0 overall, and a win would give the program its best non-conference record in 16 years, since the 2001 team went 5-1-1. It wouold also allow the team to build momentum before it begins Mid-American Conference play in one week with home matches against Ball State and Miami.Â
SCOUTING ROBERT MORRIS
The Colonials have started the 2017 season with a 2-5-0 record. They dropped their first three matches without scoring a goal, and two of those matches were against MAC teams. RMU lost 2-0 at Ohio and 4-0 at Central Michigan. In between, they were also shutout 2-0 by Milwaukee. Robert Morris then won two out of three with wins over Maryland-Baltimore County (2-1, OT) and at Howard (3-2). Most recently, RMU lost 1-0 at home against Canisius.
Only two Colonial players have scored this season. Jane Schleicher leads the squad with four goals and nine points, while Kristina Kelley has two goals and a team-best two assists. That pair has combined for 40 of the team's 71 shots. Sydney Bruckner (2-2) is RMU's primary goalkeeper and has a 1.77 GAA and a .743 save percentage in 458 minutes.Â
Head coach John Kowalski (96-212-22) is in his 17th season at Robert Morris.
LAST WEEK
Bowling Green won a pair of matches against Horizon League opponents last week with a 3-1 victory at Detroit Mercy and a 2-0 shutout of Wright State at home. At UDM, the Falcons fell behind 1-0 just 32 seconds into the match. However, the team responded with three unanswered goals. Madison Schupbach squared the match in the 16th minute before Nikhita Jacob scored the game-winner early in the second half for her first career goal. Erica Hubert added an insurance goal late.
Against Wright State, seniors Skylar Fleak and Rachel Winters celebrated Senior Day by providing the Falcons' two goals. Winters' score was her second-game winner of the season, while goalkeeper Victoria Cope earned her second shutout.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK FLEAK
Senior forward Skylar Fleak (Sunbury, Ohio) earned her second MAC Offensive Player of the Week award in 2017 by posting a goal and two assists in BGSU's two wins last week. She leads the MAC in goals and points and is tied for the lead in assists. She ranks tenth nationally in points per game and is in the top 20 in total points and goals per game.
Fleak earned her first MAC Player of the Week award following her four-goal performance in BGSU's season-opening 5-1 win at Oakland. In 2017, she now has five goals, three assists and 13 points. She has moved into third place on BGSU's all-time list for career goals (21) and into a tie for sixth for career points )50).
OFFENSE ON THE PROWL
There's no question that BGSU has ramped up their aggression on offense in 2017. The Falcons have had more shots and more shots on goal than their opponent in five of six games this season; for the season as a whole, they've outshot their opponents by nearly a 2:1 margin (99-58). Through one-third of the schedule, BGSU is on pace for its most shots (297) and goals (39) since 2004, its fewest-ever shots allowed (174), and its fewest goals allowed since 2008 (18).
FANNON'S FIRST
Bowling Green head coach Matt Fannon won his first game at the helm of the Falcons when the team defeated Oakland, 5-1 on Friday, Aug. 18. Fannon arrived at BGSU last December following four successful years at Wittenberg, where he totaled a 40-26-10 record and won conference coach of the year honors in 2016. Fannon is the third of the five coaches in BGSU history to win their first career game, joining Tom Piccirillo (1-0 at Kent State, 1997) and Andy Richards (2-0 vs St. Bonaventure, 2000). With a win against Robert Morris, Fannon would hold the best record through seven games of any first-year coach in Falcon history.
HOORAY FOR HUBERT
Redshirt junior Erica Hubert closed out BGSU's 3-1 win at Detroit Mercy with her second goal of the season following a pass from Marissa Swindell in the 75th minute. It was her second goal of the 2017 season, but both have served as insurance goals to secure two of the Falcons' three road victories. The first was in the team's 2-0 shuout at Morehead State. Hubert is now ninth on BGSU's career goals list with 17.
SENIOR LEADERSHIP
Defenders rarely get scoring opportunities, so when those arrive, it's special. Senior Rachel Winters scored against Chicago State less than a month into her BGSU career in 2014 but did not even get a shot during her sophomore and junior seasons. Two games into her final campaign with the Falcons, Winters earned two shots (both on goal) against Morehead State. She buried oen in the net in the 55th minute for the first game-winning goal of her career. Winters only had to wait two weeks for another chance. On Senior Day against Wright State, she scored her second goal (and game-winner) of 2017 off a set piece in the 22nd minute during BGSU's 2-0 win.
A KENNEDY SPECIALTY
Maureen Kennedy's penalty kick goal against Michigan State was the Falcons' 21st all-time in 24 attempts (..875), while opponents have scored on only 16 of 29 (.552) penalty kick chances. Kennedy, a sophomore defender from Cypress, Calif., now has three goals from penalty kicks in just 21 career games. Those account for 60 percent of her five career goals. She is tied for second-most in BGSU history and needs one to tie the co-record holders Beth Wechsler (78 matches played) and Colleen Kordan (83 MP). In addition to her PK goal, Kennedy has three assists in 2017 and is second on the team with five points. She has at least one point in three straight matches.Â
FANTASTIC FRESHMAN
Freshman defender Nikhita Jacob (Ann Arbor, Mich.) had a hand in both of BGSU's game-winning goals last week. At Detroit Mercy, Maureen Kennedy was fouled and took a free kick from 40 yards out. It was deflected by Skylar Fleak and Jacob beat the Titan goaltender for her first career goal in the 3-1 win. Jacob then posted her first career assist in BGSU's 2-0 win against Wright State. Kennedy knocked a corner kick into the box, which Jacob headed to Rachel Winters. Winters put the ball home for the first goal of the match.
