LAST WEEK
Bowling Green dropped a difficult 2-1 decision to Michigan State last Friday in the team's first game of 2017 at Cochrane Stadium. The Falcon offense started out fast, achieving ten shots (five on goal) in the first half, but they could not pierce the defense of goalkeeper Reilley Ott. MSU took a 1-0 lead 37:29 into the first half and added to it with 13:00 to play. BGSU finally scored when Marissa Swindell was fouled in the box, which led to a Maureen Kennedy penalty kick in the 88th minute. Kennedy was successful, and she is now 3-for-3 on PKs in her career.
SENIOR DAY
Senior Day for the 2017 women's soccer team is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 10. The Falcons will celebrate the careers of their four seniors prior to that afternoon's match against Wright State, which is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Cochrane Stadium.Â
Forward Mikaela Couch (Columbus, Ohio) has played 59 games, scored five goals and posted six assists. She has a career shot percentage of .172.Â
Forward Skylar Fleak (Sunbury, Ohio) has scored 20 goals in 57 career games, which is tied for third-most in BGSU history. Five of those have been game-winners. She adds six assists and has a career shot percentage of .130.Â
Midfielder Madison Schupbach (Rochester, Mich.) has scored six goals and eight assists in 60 career games.Â
Defender Rachel Winters (Plymouth, Mich.) posted her second career goal this season, the game-winner at Morehead State and two assists in 53 career games. She has also helped the Falcons achieve a 1.35 GAA since the start of the 2016 season.
PENALTY KICKS ARE A KENNEDY SPECIALTY
Maureen Kennedy's penalty kick goal was the Falcons' 21st all-time in 24 attempts (..875), while opponents have scored on only 16 of 29 (.552) penalty kick chances. Kennedy, a sophomore defender from Cypress, Calif., now has three goals from penalty kicks in just 21 career games. Those account for 60 percent of her five career goals. She is tied for second-most in BGSU history and needs one to tie the co-record holders Beth Wechsler (78 matches played) and Colleen Kordan (83 MP).
Â
OFFENSE ON THE PROWL
There's no question that BGSU has ramped up their aggression on offense in 2017. For the third time In four games, the Falcons out-shot their opponent. On Friday, Bowling Green attempted 17 shots to nine by Michigan State and owned a 7-4 shots-on-goal advantage. This follows shot advantages of 25-5 against Morehead State and 11-8 against Oakland. In 2017, BGSU has taken 62 shots to just 40 by their opponents. They also hold a better conversion percentage (.129 vs .125) and a better shots-on-goal percentage (.435 vs .375).
Â
FANNON'S FIRST
Bowling Green head coach Matt Fannon won his first game at the helm of the Falcons when the team defeated Oakland, 5-1 on Friday, Aug. 18. Fannon arrived at BGSU last December following four successful years at Wittenberg, where he totaled a 40-26-10 record and won conference coach of the year honors in 2016. Fannon is the third of the five coaches in BGSU history to win their first career game, joining Tom Piccirillo (1-0 at Kent State, 1997) and Andy Richards (2-0 vs St. Bonaventure, 2000).
When BGSU defeated Morehead State on Aug. 25, Fannon joined Richards as the only two coaches in BGSU history to win their first two matches. With a win against Michigan State, Fannon would be the first to win three of his first four matches with the Falcons.
FLEAK'S FINEST
BGSU senior forward Skylar Fleak (Sunbury, Ohio/Big Walnut) had a day for the ages in the 5-1 victory at Oakland. She scored four goals and became the third player in Falcon history to reach that mark, joining Kristy Coppes (6, 8/27/2004) and Samantha Meister (4, 10/12/03). Her third goal, scored 2:07 into the second half, netted the tenth hat trick in team history. In addition, Fleak increased her career total to 20 goals. That moves her into a tie with Alyssa Zuccaro (2008-11) for third place on BGSU's all-time list. Only Coppes (52, 2001-04) and Meisster (28, 2002-05) have scored more.
FLEAK'S FOUR GOALS
#1: 8:57 (1) -- Shot from 5 yards out, went through keeper's hands (Kennedy assist)
#2: 12:19 (1) -- Shot from 10 yards out following turnover (Swindell assist)
#3: 47:07 (2) -- Shot from 6 yards out, beat three defenders (Swindell assist)
#4: 65:50 (2) -- Shot from 10 yards out following corner kick (Schupbach assist)
WEEKLY HONORS
Skylar Fleak earned conference and national recognition following her four-goal effort at Oakland. First, she was named the inaugural Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the 2017 season. During the opening weekend, Fleak outscored every other MAC team, including nine that played twice. She was also named to the TopDrawerSoccer National Team of the Week. That team is comprised of 11 players from throughout the NCAA Division I ranks.
HOORAY FOR HUBERT
Redshirt junior Erica Hubert tallied her first goal of the 2017 season against Morehead State. Hubert earned 15 goals during her first two seasons and is already tied for ninth in BGSU history for most goals in a career. Hubert posted seven shots, four of which were on goal, against the Eagles and led BGSU in both categories. She added three shots (one on goal) at Butler.
SENIOR LEADERSHIP
Defenders rarely get scoring opportunities, so when those arrive, it's special. Senior Rachel Winters scored against Chicago State less than a month into her BGSU career in 2014 but did not even get a shot during her sophomore and junior seasons. Two games into her final campaign with the Falcons, Winters earned two shots (both on goal) against Morehead State. She buried oen in the net in the 55th minute for the first game-winning goal of her career.
SCOUTING DETROIT MERCY
The Detroit Mercy Titans have begun the 2017 season with a 2-3-1 record. They started with three consecutive shutouts: a scoreless draw with Toledo and wins of 3-0 over Fort Wayne and 5-0 over Lawrence Tech. They have since dropped three straight, including a 3-1 loss at Pittsburgh and back-to-back 1-0 losses in Arizona against Northern Arizona and Grand Canyon.Â
Rachel Russo leads Detroit Mercy with four goals and eight points. Those totals include a hat trick against Fort Wayne. Rachel DeLuca has added two goals and three assists, two of which came against Lawrence Tech. She also leads the team with 18 shots. Marina Manzo has played all 560 minutes in goal and has a 0.80 GAA and .872 save percentage. The Titans are led by Mike Lupenec, who is 221-206-37 in his 26th season at Detroit.
SCOUTING WRIGHT STATE
As of this printing, the Raiders are 3-2. They opened 2017 with a split of two matches in Las Vegas against Weber State (W, 1-0) and UNLV (L, 5-1). When they returned home, they lost in double overtime to Western Michigan on a golden goal with 0:57 left in the match. WSU responded by winning 2-1 at Miami and defeating St. Bonaventure 3-0 at home. The Raiders play twice this week before facing BGSU. Their first match is Monday at #6 West Virginia, which is followed by a game at home against Valparaiso.
Niki Romero and Sarah Colvin share the team lead with two goals. Both of Romero's goals were game-winners. Aaliyah Patten leads the team with two assists and 13 shots. Miranda Thomas (1-2-0) and Maddie Jewell (2-0-0) have split time in goal. Jewell has a GAA of 0.67 in 135 minutes and has saved seven of eight shots. WSU head coach Pat Ferguson began his 13th season with a 116-86-30 record.
FALCON OUTFITTERS AT COCHRANE
Falcon Outfitters will host a merchandise sales table at Cochrane Stadium in 2017. The table will be available for fans at men's soccer matches held on Saturdays and women's soccer matches held on Fridays.
